apartment buildings on motor-
cycles. The officers were pelt-

the crowds into small groups.
A bus loaded with police offi-
cers was struck with beer
bottles as it drove down Bunk-
er Hill Street.
However, inside the schools
throughout the city, officials
said there was no trouble. At-
tendance was 58.9 per cent of
the 76,127 pupils expected to
report for classes.
Officials said the normal at-
tendance for opening day is 80
per cent. About 50 per cent of
the total is white, 35 per cent;
black and 15 per cent Hispanic
and other.
