Sunday, December 121, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Twenty-Three 'USC is a formidable opponent'-Lytle Oontinued from Page 19 wiping them out.' Being a sen- ior, I should have known the Big Ten better than that. I was just careless with what I was doing. They nailed me for it, and it was the best lesson I learned. It helped me the rest of the season. I came back against Stanford and I had an -ght first half, and a good game. It's funny, because I heard some people were booing me. Against Navy, I didn't do any- thing because I had the flu. I only carried the ball nine times, something like that. DAILY: Do ignorant fans bother you? LYTLE: I don't hear them. I guess they bother my parents more than anyone. Bit if I go to a haskethall game, it bothers me when I hear peonle gettin' (lown on somenne on the court. I'd like to take them and say, 'Whv don't yo" get down there and show 'em how to do it?' I mean, the nlayer might be hav- inga had day, and everyone has their bad days. Nobody can be perfeCt. What's a gtv like that trying to nrove? Let him go to his besness-I'd like to see him h,- a great dav every day. He iht lo a 3000-dollar sale on a car. I don't hear anyone i,mnin' on him. 'You blew that oo, von ierk.' Those ni vers are working h-rd, thev've spent a lot of honrs. I don't see why anyone s5o I.1 have to take that. But tho+'s the woo things are. DAstnY: What was it like to eo home to Ohio after the OSU game this year? LYTLE: I just hibernated. I didn't even want to go out. It's fionv-mv dad owns a store, and there's this guy who gradu- ated from Ohio State, a doctor. He had all these bets on Ohio State. He took out a gift cer- tificate from my dad's store to pav off his hets, and they said "From Rob Lytle" on them. He's a real character. Bat mostly I just ran with my does and snent the time with my family. I didn't watch much football. but I caught the last part of the Penn State-Pitt game. That was a melee of mis- takes. But Pitt's got a darn good f team, and Dorsett's a darn good back. I also watched part of the USC-Notre Dame game, but I don't think that's any indica- tion of what they can do. I don't think we could have played very well coming off Ohio State, and it's just like the USC-UCLA rivalry out there. We're going to have to play a heck of a game to beat USC. They're a formidable opponent. But I don't get into watching football. I just like to watch the big games. DAILY: Do you watch a game any differently than the average fan does? LYTLE: I watch the linemen and defensive tackles. You got- ta follow the ball, of course, but I enjoy watching the blocking, schems of the teams, how they go about making a hole for a back. I like watching people get overpowered - I like to watch our line work, they're so physical. That's something I've always wished I could do. I always wanted to be about 6-8 and 270 and be a big defensive tackle and just destroy people. I played linebacker in high school. I use to love defense. DAIY:Did yu ever con- sider playing defense up here? LYTLE: Nobut hell, I-would have played ing, if the d given me the onortnnity I a. that the coaches thought I could But they kept their confidence I have the highest regard for play different positions. I was in me, and I was able to derive our coaches. They're an A-1 really surprised when they put confidence from them. They group of guys. Now, if you ask me at fullback. I almost said: stuck behind me, an I don't 'What are you talkin' about, think I would have done as well someone else on the team, they puttin' me at fullback? Think I if they hadn't. The thing that might have another idea. My can do it?' I've seen these big saved me at that position was whole idea of athletics is work backs get destroyed at full- being quicker than everybody as hard as you can, do what- back,-and here they want to put else. That enabled me to get ever you can, and whatever a little person like me at full- into people faster than they happens, happens. If you make back. were used to. it you should be satisfied. A lot of people get teed off and look for excuses. You can see right through a lot of that stuff. They make a lot of mistakes or do dumb things or don't work hard enough. I can see why they aren't playing. I feel if you work hard as you can without killing yourself, it'll pay off in the long run.
