Throughout the 1976 season the Blue defense improved vastly as the season wore on, and Mbel- ler's Monsters tied Rutgers for the nation's best defense against the score, yielding 7.4 points per game. After allotting 27 points to the Wisconsin Badgers in the season opener, the Wolverines went on to post five shutouts, and gave up a meager total of 81 points on the campaign. In the third quarter the Mich- igan defense gave up only one touchdown all season - to the Badgers. All-American Calvin O'Neal spearheads the Blue defense. For the second consecutive year the senior co-captain from Sag- inaw led the Wolverines in tac- kles. On the season O'Neal had 86 solo tackles and assisted on 54 others for a 140 total. For the first part of the sea- son, sophomore Jerry Meter started at the other linebacker spot opposite O'Neal. Meter had 68 tackles and one interception. Halfway through the season sen- ior Jerry Vogele took over the spot and played very well. The 6-3, 235 Cincinnati na- tive recorded 72 tackles and will best be remembered for his blitz in this year's Ohio State game w h i c h forced Buckeye quarterback Jim Pa- centa to throw a key inter- ception just before the half. Tackle Greg Morton, an All- Big Ten selection, started for third consecutive year, and the 6-2, 225 pound senior had 72 solo tackles and assisted on 52 others. Noted for his quickness, Morton also totaled seven quar- terback sacks for 32 yards in losses. At the other tackle, senior John Hennessy made a name for himself. In his first full sea- son as a starter, Hennessy own- ed 81 tackles in addition to five quarterback sacks, and saved his best for the Ohio State game. The Blue defense has a lot of depth at the end, or wide line- backer position. Two year letter- man John Anderson, who. dou- bles as thekMichigan punter, had 62 tackles this fall. The junior from Waukesha, Wiscon- sin, who often drops back on pass coverage, grabbed three in terceptions and pounced on three fumbles. At the other end, sophomore Tom Seabron and junior Dom Tedesco both saw action this season. Seabron started the year with a good game against Wisconsin, but injured his shoulder in the process. In the season finale in Columbus, Seabron turned in a sterling performance when Anderson See HICKS, Page 16 BIG DADDY'bEN "ONLY LOVE IS BETTER THAN BIG DADDY'S!" STEAKS " SEAFOOD 9 SALAD BAR 24 OZ. T HIRT By RICH LERNER When Michigan and Southern Cal lock horno in the Rose Bowl, New Year's Day, it should be an even battle. Both teams fea- ture explosive offenses powered by superb ground games, al- though both suffer from incon- sistent passing at times. Defensively, both teams rely on quickness and pursuit to stop opponents' running games and zone coverage for pass de- fense. Here's how the teams match up: *Offensive ends - Curt Step- henson and his back-up Rick White are so'lid at split end for Michigan. Both serve mainly as decoys to take pressure off of Jim Smith. Wolverine tight ends Gene Johnson and Mark Sch- merge are good blockers, and an integral part of Michigan's offensive line. Johnson is the better receiver. USC's Randy Simmrin is an Try Daily- Classif ieds outstanding split end, who aver- aged over 210 yards per catch on 31 receptions, this fall.Back-ups Steve O'Bradovich and Mike Robinson are adequate but not up to Simmrin's par. 6-6 tight end Bill Gay is a solid blocker but doesn't catch many passes. EDGE-USC. * Offensive line - No defense held up under the onslaught of Michigan's all-junior line of Bill Dufek, Gerry Szara, Walt Down- ing, Mark Donahue and Mike Kenn. Even Ohio State's touted defensive wall could only hold out for the first half. Donahue and Dufek earned some All- American mention. Second-team all-conference guard-tackle Kirk Lewis provides extraordinary depth. 6-5, 265-pound Marvin Powell anchors the Trojan trench crew.
