Page Twelve "H E MICHIGAN DAILY Sunday, December 12, 1976 Leach mastered '76 offense (Continuaed from Page 9) "Leach was an inconsistent passer, though. He did hit 49 per cent of his passes for 897 yards and 13 touchdowns, but he had his bad games. Kind of hard to expect great pass- ing on a team that only pass- ed nine times a game, though. "But, hell, he averaged six yards rushiag and averaged pickup over a nine and a half yard gain every time he drop- ped back - only 93 attempts. He was 14th in the Heisman voting that year, and all-Big Ten. Good man. "But if you really want to know why that team was such an offensive powerhouse, check _out the offensive line. Those guys were big, coordinated, ex- perienced and tough. "Only one made All-America that year but three of them, "Uncle Bill" Dufek, Walt Down- ing and the All-American, Mark Donohue, made first team all- Big Ten. "Dufek and Mike Kenn were the tackles, and at 6-4, 250 and 6-6 , 245 they bowled over a lot of people. Kenn wasn't quite the power tackle Dufek was but he was a great athlete and held his blocks a long time. "The guards were Donohue and Gerry Szara, and they weren't exactly small either - 6-3t, 245 and 6-2, 240. There were a lot of blocking assign- ments for those guys to learn in Michigan's option offense and they were always there. Leach used a long count pret- ty often, too, and I think we jumped offsides maybe twice all year. "Kirk Lewis was one of the last great student-athletes. He was a guard too, but he got hurt at the start of the sea- son and didn't come back un- til the game before Ohio State. And he sat out the year from his Inteflex studies to live up to his co-captain role. "Downing was the 6-4, 250 center, and he made it a lot easier for skinny ole Lytle to slither up that middle. But the amazing thing about that offen- sive line was their play the next season, when they were all back except Lewis. Five seniors, and damnation if every one of them didn't make either All-America or all-Big Ten. I think Szara and Kenn might have been sec- ond team. "Oh yeah, and we had two soph tight ends, Gene Johnson and Mark Schmerge. Johnson caught three touchdowns and played a bit more, but they were both pretty good. Pretty big, too - 6-4, 220 and 6-3, 235.
