Powerful offense, quick 'D' pace USC By RICK MADDOCK Southern California boasts a power squad and a quickness squad. When the Trojans drive down the gridiron, their major asset is power. USC's iftense is not called merely offense; it's called the Power-I, accent on power. "Offensively, power is our number one asset," USC coach John Robinson said. When the Trojans' opponent has the ball, then the Cardinal and Gold displays its quickness. The opposing team's offensive line has to use size and power in the pits, because USC's line will get the better jump. "The matchup will be speed against speed when Michigan has the ball, and speed against power when we have the ball," Robinson said of this year's Rose Bowl. Robinson, feels his team will be able to stop Michigan's powerful offensive attack if the Tro- jans can hold their own in the quickness match- up. "I hope there will be kind of a standoff," Robinson said. THE TROJANS SPORT A 10-1 record, with that lone black mark coming against Missouri in USC's opening game. The Tigers clobbered the Trojans, 46-25. Robinson blames the loss on lack of preparation and the new coaching staff. "It was the first game of the season. We just weren't ready," Robinson said. From then on, however, USC has cranked out 10 straight wins, its last two against UCLA and Notre Dame. The Trojans jumped to a 24-0 lead in the Rose Bowl qualifying game, and they hung on to beat the Bruins, 24-14. In the Notre Dame game, obviously anti-climatic, USC play- ed sloppily, but won. 17-13. "We were as about as flat against Notre Dame as we were ready against UCLA. It wasn't a true indication of our team. We had a bad game, but still won," Robinson said. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA's offensive statis- tics and personnel rank among the best in the nation. USC places third on total offense with 432.5 yards per game, and third in scoring with 33.8 points per game. (Michigan is first in both categories, 448.1'yards and 38.7 points, respec- tively.) All-American Ricky Bell's awesome running heads the USC power attack. Bell, who carried 276 times for 1,417 yards, this season, has been hampered with a bad ankle since the California game, in late October. Yet, he leads the Tro- jans in scoring with 86 points, made up of 14 touchdowns and one two-point- conversion. "Our ballclub, I think, is going to be well. We expect Ricky Bell to be% lttt for the game," Robinson said. Freshman Charles White, Bell's backup at tail back, carried 124 times for 744 yards, sporting a 6.0 average. White, along with two of his high school teammates, was named Los An- geles player of the year, last year. SIGNAL-CALLER VINCE EVANS, whose pass- ing is criticized by some, completed 52%, of his passes for 1,259 yards.
