Sunday, December 12, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five Sunday, December 12, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five Spec By TOM CAMERON The last time the Wolverine football team met Southern Cal- ifornia, Bo Schembechler was green to big-time college foot- ball. You see, Michigan was not e-en suppose to be in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, 1970. Michigan was not suppose to win the Big Ten title, either, and for that matter, no one thought Bo's boys would beat Ohio State so convincingly. tre of This was Schembechler's first year as Michigan's head coach. He was not suppose to take all the marbles. That's not polite. A rookie coach should have been more gracious. So when Michigan arrived in Pasadena, Bo was just a rookie with a funny first name and a hard to pronounce last name. He was introduced coming off the plane as "Bo Shembler," which was easier to -say, but nonetheless wrong. After nine years though, Sch- embechler is almost a household ivord. Whsen he goes to the Rose Bowl this year, that thing about his name won't happen again. Neither, Bo hopes, will a lot of other things that went on that year. The 1970 Rose Bowl game was one disaster after another for Michigan and Bo Schembechler. It started off with a few minor injuries to some players, but then running back Glenn Dough- ty came up with a knee injury, putting him in the stands for the game. Then, the day before game the roof fell in. Schembechler suffered a heart attack. The players, stunned, took the field wondering abo>ut the mas who had taken them this far nod now was in a hospital hed. past Some of them wept openly be- fore the game. Michigan gave the Trojans a courageous fight, but the offense came up short against the in- famous "Wild Bunch"-the USC defensive line of Charlie Weav- er, All-American Jimmy Gunn, Al Cowling, Tody Smith, and Bubba Scott. John McKay's Trojans opened up the scoring with a field goal haunts Bo "in the first quarter and then, once anain, the world just wasn't goinn U-M's way. As if the loss of Doughty and Schembechler were not enough, four plays into the second quar- ter, Billy Taylor, who filled in for Doughty, was sidelined with a neck injury. Michigan answered USC's field goal nonetheless by driving to the Trojan 9-yard line but was unable to score a touchdown in three tries. Michigan settled for a field goal to tie the game. The Michigan defense hadn't given up a first down, save for one penalty, when USC scored in the third quarter on a pass after M i c h i g a n quarterback Moorhead was intercepted at his 49 yard line.
