Literary college (LSA) Dean Billy Frye defended the invita- tion to Ford, and said that ques-j tioning Ford's qualifications showed a "pretty narrow-I minded point of view." "SOMEONE who has been President of the 'United States certainly has something to of- fer to students," Frye con- tinued. "I don't think the ques- tion here is whether he has the n or m a l credentials of a! scholar." Prof. Harold Jacobson, chair- man of the Political Science department, also defended the: invitation. "He's spent his life in what we study," he said. Jacobson said that Ford wouldj not be teaching classes on a regular basis, in class every? day and grading student's work. Jacobson does not see the ad- dition of Ford to the faculty as a strain to University funds. Ford's salary, according to' Jacobson, would not be compe-j titive with the rest of the fac-! ulty's salaries.I Jacobson, hopes that Ford, will contribute to both graduate and undergraduate courses on the presidency and Congress. He also mentioned the possi-: bility of Ford working in the University's Institute of Public Policy. Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reported in its Thursday edition that the Uni- versity of Maryland-Baltimore County is taking steps to offer Ford the school's chancellor- ship.
