"The guys are pretty inde pendent," he said, they k.-tw what they've got to do." Indeed, the team is not in need of dominant leadership.. "We have a pretty united group," Frieder said. "They've played with each other for awhile and they know each other and like each other. It's a very good situation." COACH JOHNNY Orr couldn't be more satisfied with the co- captains he has this year. "They are both super kids. They've really done the job since they haev come to Mich- igan-G rote as a freshman starter and Rob the last two years. "They're both very fine com- petitors and I'm sure they'll do well in whatever they do." G ROTE STARTED as a fresh- man olt of Cincinnati Elder High School, where he was state tournament }MVP and an All- A-terican linebacker. Never quite getting football ort of his blood, Grote uses a r'gged defense and an aggres- sie offense. Pla-ing net to high-scoring "'tards, his scoring average has dropped slightly the past few yeats, so his career average is ,ow 12 points a game. However, his shooting percentage has im- proved as Grtte shot ,507 from the floor last season. THE FIRST-TEAM Academic All-American s e 1 e c t i o n has never missed playing in any of the 86 games since he first wore the Maize and Blue. Grote's best contribution to the team 0 has been his late sea- son playsAs a sophomore, Grote led the team in either scoring way' or rebounding in the last live games of the season. As a junior, Grote's relent- tess defense and playmaking helped spark the Wolverines to the NCAA finals. "GROTE HAS come on at the ead for us," Orr said. "As a soahomaore, he played like he was the best g'tard in the Big Ten the last few weeks. And last year, he carried us right througl to the tournament." John Robinson, the unsung but ever-productive forward, is al- ways strong and dangerous around the boards. Rob's outside shot has im- proved each year -- however, most of his points result from aggressive play inside. WHEN ROBINSON s h o o t s, chances are that he'll score. le See GROTE, Page 16 DANCING to LIVE BANDS 7 nights a week AT THP sandalwo RESTAURANT & LOUNGE NOW APPEARING ~High Casual dress -ALSO- atop "Jazz" the it our 1 st floor PUB Fri. & Sot. eve Sndlw ed SunNeve.
