Bo Schembechler leaked to the press, at his weekly luncheon yesterday, that in order to sur- prise Ohio State Saturday, he's junking option football and thej I-formation in favor of the shotgun. He also announced the installment of a new defense designed to stop the Buckeyes'j vaunted passing attack. Predictably, Bo calls the annual battle for the Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl a toss-up. W EST SIDE "Ifeel we're going in even-up," Schembechler said. "In 1970 they won 20-9, and I felt Ohio State had the" superiorl team. But in 1971 I felt we had a superior team to them. The rest of the -years the teams have been very similar. The Wol- verines have lost on missed field goals, goal-line stands, field goals never-tried and interceptions. "I don't look at it like we're jinxed or anything like that," said Schembechler, ironically clad in a gray jacket with a scarlet tie. "I second-guess myself all the time and some of them I win 50-0. th"We don't have anything to prove other than we can beat them this year." Bo discounts the effect of playing the game in Columbus. "There's always a home-team advantage, but I don't think it's as great in an emotional game. I think that stadium is a nice stadium to play in, they just have to keep the crowd noise down. "If we're in a goal-line situation, like at Purdue, we're not going to snap that ball until they quiet the crowd down. But I'm not concerned. We play before 100,000 every week. That will be one of our smaller crowds. And if the weather's bad, no one will notice it." In past Michigan-Ohio State games, the Buckeyes sticky defense has forced Schembechler to pass more than usual. Four times Bo has thrown 20 passes or more against the Buckeyes, reaching a zenith in 1970 with 26 and a low the following year with only 10. And with a healthy Jim Smith, don't be surprised to see Rick Leach putting the ball in the air. "I feel confident in our pass," Schembechler said. "Leach is much better going in to Ohio State than a year ago." In fact, Bo confided he does have a few special plays just for Ohio State that won't appear on the films. However if Bo should spot a photographer or spy from practice, he isn't going to bother to chase across the street to get him this year. "I've got a crew of goons already picked out." 1-STOP SHOPPING SAVES MONEY, TIME, ENERGY : " . TONIGHT Is: I q a -I 1 : ^ 'I A.
