Red-shirting can be used in all sports and is a decision that can be vital to a player's career. But the players are given no guarantees and an idle year can be hell. Those who have been in the program seem to have benefitted from it, and by the looks of their record, so have the 1976 Wolverines. By comparison, the PAC-8 stands at 14-15-1, having played opponents of distinctly lower quality than that which the Big Ten has come up against. And the heralded Southwestern Con- ference is 13-9 against far infer- ior competition. Yet, over half of the Big Ten's foes have been, or presently are, ranked in the nation's top twenty. With the youth and improve- ment shown by most conference members, the future appears very bright. The Big Two may still be tremendous football pow'ers, but the little eight has opened some eyes as well. While the Big Ten pronounce- ment of subremacy will have to wait at least another year, the conference is now posses- sive of the nation's top-ranked team, and can be. secure in the knowledge that no longer do they have to take a back seat to anyone.
