"I think the opposition is showing they're out of touch with what America wants and I'm going to use as my text, a speech the Republican Presi- dent made last week at anoth- er institution in Michigan, the name of which I now forget," the Minnesota senator told a gathering of about 400 MSU students who approved his cold reference to the University with a healthy round of applause. "When he gave this speech," Mondale continued, "he said, The following are the key is- sues in America: A job for ev- eryone with a good future; home ownership for all; quality, education for every American; good health care for all that's affordable; safety against crime and a national improved system of parks. "I BELIEVE the President has a spy on his staff who slip- ped him the wrong list because that's a list of his failures, not his successes," said Mondale. "I've checked his record, and the only park that he's support- ed in the last eight years is the president of South Korea (Park Chung Hee)," he said, launch- ing an attack of Ford's policies. A disshevelled Donald Riegle, the Democratic candidate for Phil Hart's senate seat, arrived at the MSU student union ball- room during Mondale's address, momentarily upstaging the sen- ator. FOLLOWING Mon- dale's speech Riegle told the partisan student audience: "If there's going to be any chance to depart from. an awful past it's with the Carter - Mon-! dale ticket. And make no mis-' take about it with respect to the administration that's in power; today. It's true that Gerald Ford's in the front window, but this is a Nixon administration. Arthur Burns of the Federal Reserve system - who hired him? Richard Nixon did. Who hired William Simon from the treasury department? Richard Nixon did. Who runs foreign policy? Henry Kissinger, Who hired Kissinger? Richard Nixon did. And now we've got Gerald Ford in the front window, and who hired him? Richard Nixon did, and I want them all out!" Following his East Lansing appearance, Mondale trekked 30 miles to the small town of Durand, where Ford had visit- ed just four months ago on his whistle-stop tour of the state. A SIZEABLE contingent of the town's 4,000 citizens turned out to greet Mondale, who ac- cepted a gift from a first grade class on the steps of city hall and met Durand city officials. A UNIVERSITY Hospital spokeswoman disclosed that Conover had been admitted to the facility two weeks ago, but would not elaborate on the cir- cumstances. Scholbe said Con- over had told him he entered; the hospital for a routine check- up, but officials there would not confirm this report. Bernard Teshich, a Couzens resident, saw Conover standing atop the roof of the building early yesterday morning, but said he had no idea that the. man intended to jump. "I left (after noticing Con- over) and I later found out that he had jumped. I didn't know who he was," Teshich said. Building Director Spillane said he was acquainted ,with the deceased but had no reason to suspect Conover was unhap- py with his job. But, Spillane added, "It would not be unreasonable to assume that he was highly de- pressed." He described Conover as "a very kind, gentle man."
