Page Ten THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, September 24, 1976 Page Ten THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, September 24, 1976 SEASON OPENER TODAY: a Women netters en By ENID GOLDMAN Boosted by the addition of four freshpersons, a new coach, a reorganized program which provides scholarships, practice facilities and equipment, the women's tennis team takes the court in today's home opener, a noticeably improved and philo- sophically changed unit. Two nationally ranked players, veteran Barbara Selden and freshperson Kathy Karzen, head the roster of talented Wolverines. to meet a hardly imposing Henry Ford Community College squad this afternoon 3:00 p.m. at the varsity tennis courts. "I think we're going to be a * heck of a lot stronger team this season," noted Michigan coach: John Atwood. "We've got three! freshmen, K a r z e n, Deborah Rentschler and Ann Kercher whose level of competency is up there with Selden's." Jan Kar- zen, Jody Strom, Missy Pollick and Melinda Fertig, last year's second, third, fourth and fifth seeded players return this fall. However, they will probably start in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions due to high caliber performances by the in- coming freshpersons. The additional strength of this year's Blue line-up most likely won't alter the outcome *I of today's confrontation with HFCC, which in a previous encounter was unable to win one game in nine matches. But, logically, according to Atwood, the squad's overall improvement should make a considerable difference in the scheduled bouts with tradi- tionally tough Ohio State, Pur- due and Michigan State, all which soundly trounced the Wolverines in post-season tournament play last May. "It was hard to make the team- this year," stated Selden. "We'll be better prepared men- tally and physically. Last year we won a lot of matches but the team attitude wasn't there." Selden credits the change of attitude with the reorganiza-. tion of the women's program in general, and the arrival of John Atwood as coach. This year the women receive indoor court time 2-21 hours per day, all week long, and a supply of tennis shoes and racket re- stringings as needed. Last year, practice time was limited to 1- 1% hours twice a week, with one pair of tennis shoes provided and no reimbursement for rack- et maintenance. "The change in administration has definitely been felt this year with the new women's athletic' director, Virginia Hunt being the impetus for much positive change," stated Atwood. "Title IX made it possible, but we woaldn't be receiving quite our I Qualifying rounds I iter new era fair share if there wasn't an what Janet Wilson terms, "a enforcer.
