WASHINGTON (A) - Pr-
chasers of new 1977 model cars
can expect to get about six per
cent better gasoline mileage
than owners of 1976 model cars
and 34 per cent better mileage
than owners of 1974 models, the
Environmental Protection Ag-
ency said yesterday.
The agency said the 1977 mod-
el cars tested in its laboratory
averaged a theoretical 18.6
miles per gallon of gas, or one
mile a gallon better than the
1976 models tested a year ago.
THE 18.6 MILES a gallon in-
dustry average exceeds the 18.0
miles a gallon federal fuel
economy standard which will
go into effect with 1978 model
cars. There was no federal re-
quirement for 1977 models.
EPA said 11 of the 13 auto-
mobile manufacturers met the
1978 standard with their 1977
models and 7 of the manufac-
turers met the 1980 standard of
20.0 miles a gallon.
The improved mileage is the
result of better engines, new
engine combinations and chan-
ges in the average weight of the
cars produced by each manu-
facturer, EPA said. Slightly
over half of the improvement
resulted from better engines
and new engine compartments,
the agency said.

cars dominated the top mileage
spots with the diesel-powered
Volkswagen Rabbit taking the
number one spot with an aver-
age 44 miles a gallon, EPA
said. The agency said the 9-
cubic - inch Rabbit diesel aver-
aged 39 miles on its simulated
city driving cycle and 52 miles
on the simulated highway cy-
cle.
A four-cylinder Toyota Corolla
with a 71-cubic-inch engine took
second place with a 41 miles
a gallon rating while the Volks-
wagen Dasher diesel was third
with 40 miles a gallon.
The Mazda 808 with a 78
cubic inch engine was fourth
with 38 miles a gallon. The top
American finisher was the
Chevrolet Chevette with a 98-
cubic-inch engine. It finished
fifth with 36 miles a gallon.
ALL OF THE top finishers
had manual transmissions. The
top finisher with an automatic
transmission was the Chevro-
let Chevette, which averaged
30 miles a gallon on the EPA
cycle.
The biggest over-all improve-
ment by a manufacturer came
from Mazda, which improved
the mileage of its line by an
average 19.2 per cent.

horses up to 12 years old -

"We've got some old horses
here who've done many, many
years on the job," said Lt. Ri-
chard Risoli of the mounted
unit. "These horses could be let
go if we had replacements for
them."
BECAUSE OF the city's fiscal
situiation, he said, the decision
was made to ask the public to
donate horses.
"Most New Yorkers loved
the mounted. We thought it
would be a good thing," Risoli
said.
So police printed 1,000 copies
of a composite sketch of the
tyne of horse they want with
instr' ctions for potential donors

"WE ARE asking for black,
chestmit or bay geldings, no
older than 12 years of age and
in good, sound condition," said
jPisoli. Perhaps most important,
it must be a-horse who can han-
dle the city's hustle, he said.
"He's got to be a, sensible
sonofagun, he's got to be a
horse that can go out there and
stand up to what this city has
to throw at him," said Risoli.
He paused, laughed and added,
"I don't mean that literally."
