Thursday, September 9, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Ntn-'l Thursday, September 9, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Ntn~' r 'U, cuts child care center staffs By LANI JORDAN Due to a recent University budget cut, many local child- care centers will find them- selves short of valuable volun- teer workers this fall. The Childcare Development Training and Placement Pro- gram which offers credit to stu- dents in exchange for their vol- untary services is being forced to close. SPONSORED by Project Com- munity, the program provides an opportunity for students to work with children in hospitals, daycare centers and with dis- abled youngsters. "Student volunteers, with their energy and enthusiasm are a way that centers can make a go of it," said Barbara Nut- ter, student services assistant for Project Community. "I feel that the centers receiving stu- dent hours deserve better (than having volunteer help cut abruptly)." Nutter is currently trying to develop alternative funding for the. program but has nothing definite ,at this point. "We may be funded for one year in the fall, but after that we'll be in the same situation-no money." SHE ADDED, "This (alterna- tive funding) doesn't erase the University's responsibility to students and the community." While Project Community pro- gram has been cut, another - a multi-cultural day care cen- ter - sponsored by the early childhood education division of the School of Education and the International Center, will begin operation in September. This center, located at Madelyn Pound House on Hill St. at East University, has been in the works- for more than three years. Long desired by many members of the University com- munity, it has only recently be- come a reality. The goal of the Pound House center is to provide 'a balance of free play and planned activi- ty (with a focus on learning about various cultures) to the children of University students, staff and faculty. A LARGE PART of the cen- ter's 26 child capacity is antici- pated to be children of foreign students, due partly to the spon- sorship of the International Cen- ter. Some language work will also be provided. According to Pearl Axelrod, acting chairman of the interim board of Pound House, two ses-1 the center are decided by a en's program coordinator, Gale sions will be provided each day; board of parents and Univer- Resnik.
