Fridi3y, September 17, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Poge Eleven] ~riday, September 17, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Poge Eleven HILL DOUBTFUL STARTER: ..° Cordova returns to haunt defense By JOHN NIEMEYER Palo Alto, a small college town situated in the ever-mod- erate climes of the San Fran- cisco Bay area, is an ideal lo- cation for walking leisurely along the beach and tossing a football back and forth year around. It's also the home of the Stanford Cardinals. Apparently the Sanford football team has taken every advantage of the opportune' wveather, as they bring one of the nation's most potent pass- ing attacks into Michigan Sta- dium tomorrow to test the team rated first in the nation by the Associated Press. Stanfordhas had a string of great passing teams, begin- ning in '68-70, with Jim Plunk- ett, now one of the great pass- ers in professional football. Following Plunkett was red-! shirted Don Bunce who led. Stanford to a Rose Bowl vic- tory over Michigan in 1972, only one season after they had been "decimated" by the loss ofj Plunkett. Then along came Mike Bory- la, now playing for the Phila- delaphia Eagles, to lead the; awesome Stanford air attack for two seasons. This year, the Cardinals are lead by quarterback Mike Cor- dova, a name that will conjure, some bitter memories for Mich- igan fans who recall how he picked the Wolverine second- 1'ojir ir NIG(HT EDITOR: ENID GOLDMAN BOB MILLER ary apart last year on the way for 35 yards against the Nittany to a 19-19 tie. The defense runs primarily a four man front, but this sea- son will attempt to give the op- position several different looks and keep them guessing. Despite the graduation of two starters, this year's regulars Jeff Barton, Gordy Ceresino and Ray Cardinalli, saw plenty of game time in '75. Practice makes perfect, and when you practice against the best passing team in the country, you might be ex- pected to develop a pretty formidable pass defense. That's exactly what Stanford has done - the defensive sec- ondary allowed only four com- pletions in 22 attempts last All-conference safety Rich Waters is the nucleus of the backfield, being joined by two of last year's outstanding freshmen, Larry Reynolds and Savann Thompson. Junior Ralph Phillips rounds out the secondary. Thompson has a slight knee sprain, how- ever, and may see only limited action. Gone is kicker Mike Lang- ford, who kicked the 36-yard field goal with nine seconds re- maining to tie Michigan last year, but the Cardinals have found an able replacement in Mike Michel. Michel kicked two goals last week, one a 52-yarder, and will give Stanford a scoring threat any time they penetrate Wol- verine territory. ., wommoommom 'iThe Great Lakcs Steak C: LUNCI . .., DINNE Wet S.
