Saturday,,September 11, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seventeen Game experience helps secondary (Continued from Page 3) who also returns punts, is a hard hitting junior who inter- cepted two passes last year. Bolden,a senior, led the team with eight passes broken up. 7liver, also a senior, -is as fast as the rest and is almost as- sured of Dufek's spot. This quartet will have plenty of action this year with pass- minded opponents like Stanford, Wake Forest, Minnesota and maybe Northwestern and Mich- igan State on the schedule. The strongman of the Michi- gan defense is O'Neal, the senior linebacker. The pow- erful All-Big Ten selection led the team in tackles last sea- son. This year, All - American recognition is not out of reach. Second - leading tackler Dave Devich graduated, opening up the other linebacker position to senior Jerry Vogele, most like- ly. The converted fullback from Cincinnati played sparingly last season, and will receive com- petition from junior Rex Mack- all. One of Michigan's most high- ly - regarded recruits, Ron Simpkins from Detroit, was a mid-term graduate and took part in spring drills. He will add to the linebacker competi- tion. Schembechler's defensive ends are traditionally lighter and faster than most in order to drop back on pass cover- age like the linebackers. Tom Seabron and John An- derson fit this bill. Anderson, a junior with good speed, also punts for the Wolverines. He has played middle guard and linebacker for Michigan. Seabron made a name for himself in last year's Northwes- tern game, when he stormed into the backfield, grabbed the ball from a surprised Wildcat quarterback, and sprinted 40 yards for a touchdown. He is the front-runner for the other end spot. Morton is Michigan's leading defensive candidate for post- season honors. The soft-spoken tackle from Akron is entering his third year as a starter, and Schembechler says he is the quickest tackle in the country. Last year, Morton was in on 118 tackles, including 15 for losses totaling 61 yards. He finished the season with t w o e x c e p t i o n a l games against Ohio State and Oklahoma, and was as good as ever this spring. At the other tackle will be senior John Hennessy, who re- ceived considerable playing time last year as replacement for injured Jeff Perlinger. Hen- nessy had more tackles than any other non-regular. Thebattle for Davis' middle guard position will be lively. The leading candidate is Steve Anderson, a junior from Toledo, who started in the spring game. Sophomores Dale Keitz and Ky- ron Williams have good chanc- es to land the starting job. Last season, the Michigan de- fense gave up 134 yards rush- ing per game, a bit more than usual for a Schembechler team. 1975 was also the first season since '69 in which a Schembech- ler team gave up more than 100 points.
