Stanford, Gophers highlight

Wolverines

'76 schedule

Here is a quick review of
Michigan's 1976 schedule, with
each opponent presented in cap-
sulated form. Prepared by Rich
Lerner and Bill Stieg.
Stanford
Strengths: As usual, the Car-
dinals will put the ball in the
air often, and with success. Two
top quarterbacks, Mike Cordo-
va and Guy Benjamin return.
Flanker Tony Hill, a sure bet
for All-American, caught 55
passes from the tandem last
year.
Coach Jack Christiansen will
field excellent lines on both
sides of scrimmage. Alex Kara-
kazoff, Gordon King and Al
TenBruggencate are solid pass
blockers. All-American defen-
sive end Duncan McColl spear-
heads the line of Stanford's 3-4-
4 alignment. Rich Merlo is the
top linebacker and Rich Waters
heads the secondary.
Weaknesses: Injuries to the
Cardinals could be telling.
Christiansen's starters are a
solid unit, but he lacks depth.
Linebacking might be a trou-
blesome area. Place - kicker
Mike Langford must be re-
placed.
Outlook: The Cards should be
one of the nation's top teams
this year. If tailback Ron Inge
and fulba ck Don Stevenson
move the ground game, oppon-
ents won't be able to stack
against the pass.
Penn State, Michigan and San
Jose State grace the non-con-
ference schedule - good prep-
aration for the Pac-eight race
where the Cards will be in con-
tention.
Navy
Strengths: Tailback Gerry
Goodwin and option quarterback
John Kurowski lead a run-
oriented offense. Coach George
Welsh has some quality receiv-
ers but it is questionable whe-
ter Kurowski can get the ball
to them.
Jeff Sapp is an ace middle
guard and two-year starter John
Sturges returns to his corner-
back post.
Weaknesses: The passing
game is a question mark with
Kuroski at the helm. The de-
fense was decimated by grad-
uation and will be porous. The
offensive line is equally inex-
perienced as is the kicking
game.
Outlook: Murky. The running
attack looks strong but that's
about as far as it goes. Both
lines are weak and Goodwin
can't do it all by himself. Con-
necticut, William & Mary and
arch-rival Army may be the
only games Navy will win this
year after last year's 7-4 record
which included an 17-0 upset of
Pitt.
Wake Forest
Strengths: A high-scoring of-
fense returns nearly intact for
the 1976 season, led by senior
quarterback Jerry McManus.
McManus passed for 950-yards
on 77 of 152 attempts, and hit
ten TD passes. There are three
back-ups for him and all their
receivers are back.
All - purpose halfback John
Zeglinski can run and catch
with considerable prowess, and
the line protecting these stars
is all back, save one. The de-

fensive secondary is solid, led
by safety Bill Armstrong.
Weaknesses: The defensive
line was shaky last year and
there's no reason to expect im-
provement. Defensive depth
could be a problem.
Outlook: It's hard to say.
They've got 17 of 22 starters
back, but that's from a team
that was 3-8 last year, includ-
ing a loss to Appalachian St.
Wake Forest is 5-27-1 over the
last three seasons. A tough
non - conference schedule may
make it tough to break . -
Michigan State
Strengths: The bulk of an
excellent defense returns. Tac-
kle Greg Schaum is gone, but
Larry Bethea, defensive ends
Craig Fedore and Mike Dean
and middle guard Kim Rowe-
kamp return in addition to Otto
Smith, an All - Big Ten choice
in '74 who sat out last year
with an injury.
Three starters are back in the
defensive secondary with four
experienced reserves plus Ted
Bell switched from offense to
fight for the ineligible Joe
Hunt's position.
Offensively, the Spartans will
field a strong line to block for
Levi Jackson and Rich Baes.
All top, receivers from '75 are

back, but all - conference tight
end Mike Cobb must sit out the
first five games.
Weaknesses: New coach Dar-
ryl Rogers is installing a new
offense, and has yet to find a
quarterback to replace Charlie
Baggett. Marshall Lawson is the
frontrunner but freshman Mike
Marshall may figure into Rog-
ers' plans.
Seven players must sit out
against Ohio State this after-
noon. The Spartans may be un-
settled by the return of the
penalized players at different
times.
Outlook: Opponents shouldn't
let the probation lull them.
Rogers has fine material to
work with. Just take a look
what Oklahoma did when it was
on probation. With no bowls to
point to, the regular season be-
comes that much more import-
ant. If Rogers develops a quar-
terback, the Spartans will be
dangerous.
at Northwestern
Strengths: John Pont's Wild-
cats are experienced with tal-
ented players returning in the
skill positions. 27 returnees
started at least one game in
1975, 18 of those on the defen-
sive side of the scrimmage line.
Safety Pete Shaw earned All-

Big Ten honors a year ago and Randy bean is back from Mon-
should be promoted to All- treal where he was a member
American this year. With one of the United States team hand-
year remaining, tailback Greg ball squad, as was twin brother
