Page Six THE MICHIGAN DAILY Saturday, September 11, 1976 Blue, OSU1 Shootout in November By RICH LERNER 1967. That was the last time Ohio State or Michigan did not win the Big Ten football cham- pionship. In that year, Indiana, Purdue and Minnesota battled to a three-way tie. 1976 should be no different than the past nine. Oh, Minne- sota might make a few waves and knock off the rest of the "Little Eight," but when No- vember 20 rolls around the Buckeyes and Wolverines will be meeting for the Big Ten championship once again. Not that the Buckeyes and Wolverines won't have their problems. Woody Hayes must find replacements for Archie Griffin and Corny Greene-- no mean feat. The first two times Gerald carried the ball as a freshman, he scored touchdowns. Jeff Logan will have the first chance to replace the universe's only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. But Woody has an ace up his shortsleeves in junior college transfer Ron Springs. Except for finding replace- ments for Griffin, Greene and departed wingback Brian Bas- chnagel, Woody's usual block- busting team is pretty well set. 275-pound Chris Ward leads the offensive trenchmen. T he Buckeyes' defensive line of Aaron Brown, Nick Buonamici, E d d i e Beamon, Bob Brudzinski and Farley Bell is the nation's best. And big Pete Johnson put the "full" in fullback. Bo's problems are rtirror- image of Hayes'. With Rick Leach, Rob Lytle, and Jim Smith returning to the wars, Schembechler is all set at quar- terback, tailback and wingback. Bo must rebuild a defensive line which lost four starters. However, Greg Morton gives him a good start. The Maize and Blue offensive pit crew is as good as Woody's defensive line.
