Chinese
resume
praise
for Teng
By AP and Reuter

I

BIG GEORGE'S WEEKEND

7T

The Chinese press has halted
its drive to discredit former
Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-ping,
indicating the moderate leader
may be in line for a second
spectacular political comeback.
Peking wall posters were re-
ported yesterday calling Teng
"comrade" again and describ-
ing him as a victim of the now
disgraced radical clique led by]
Mao Tse-tug's widow.
AFTER MORE tha{ a week
of no Chinese press criticism
of the 72-year-old Teng, protege
of the late Premier Chou En-
lai, a Japanese newspaper said
wall posters now demanded the
truth about his overthrow. The
posters called Teng "comrade
for the first time since he was
toppled last April.
But nearby, a slogan demand-
ing the death sentence for for-
mer vice-premier Chang Chun-
chiao, one of four purged radi-
cal leaders, appeared in cen-
tral Peking for the first time
yesterday.
The slogan, pasted to a wall
along the main Avenue of Eter-
nal Tranquility, declared in
black characters: "Kill the
dog's head of the Gang of Four"
-- an unmistakable allusion to
Chang.
THE POSTERS charged that
the four -. Chang, Mao's wid-
ow Chiang Ching, Wang Hung-
wen and Yao Wen-yuan - had
provoked last April's riots in
Peking's Tien An Men square.
The riots were originally blam-
ed on Teng supporters and
brought about his dismissal.
The change in the anti-Teng
campaign suggested he may be
on the way to another dramatic
rehabilitation. He was purged
once before, also by the radi-
cals, during the tumultuous cul-
tural revolution of the 1960s, but
was restored to power in 1973
by Chou, who groomed hin to
be his successor as premier.
, Chou died one year ago tomor-
row, and China's new leaders,
headed by Communist party
chief Hua Kuo-feng, apparent-
ly are trying to identify them-
selves with his moderate poli-
cies.
THE PEKING leaders were
engaged in a major campaign
to honor Chou on the first an-
niversary of his death. The of-
ficial Hsinhua news agency on
Thursday reported publication
of 19 songs for the occasion and
described Chou as a man
"whom the people throughout
China love dearly."
At the same time Hsinhua and
the key party newspaper Peo-
ple's Daily claimed the new
leaders had the country under
control following arrest of
Mao's widow, Chiang Ching, and
her 'radical colleagues, dubbed
the "gang of four."
In claiming control, they ac-
knowledged there has been vio-
lence, armed struggle and work
sabotage in many parts of Chi-
na but said the trouble took
place before the arrest of Chiang
Ching and her radical associ-
ates.
CONFIRMATION of the vio-
lence indicated the leaders are
distrubed by widespread reports
giving the impression of contin-
uing violence three months af-
ter the arrest of the radicals.
It was not clear 'whether the
slogan demanding Chang's
death had been officially san-
tioned, but it appeared on one
of the most prominent sites in
the capital.
Analysts seriously doubted the
death sentence would be pass-
ed, but the depth of anti-radi-

cal feeling has been expressed
in a slogan at Peking Univer-
sity which demanded that the
CGang ofrFour" kneel before
Chou's portrait.
