Boyd, who finished with 14 points, had scored with two minutes remaining to pull the Titans (22-1) to within one, 63-62. Marquette then went into a delay pattern, but Boyd stole the ball from the Warriors' Bo Ellis with 36 seconds left to set up the winning shot. Marquette broke to 7-2 and 20-10 leads in the first half, and led 32-26 at intermission behind 13 points by Ellis and a sticky defense that slowed the usually fast-breaking Ti- tans. Detroit stalled for the final 2:39 of the half, then missed a last-second shot. After Detroit took advantage of three Warrior turnovers to tie the score at 32-32 early in the second half, Marquette's Butch Lee hit a basket -and Ellis scored four points to give MU a 41-34 lead. But Detroit rallied ,behind John Long, who scored the > Titans' next 12 points to cut 'Marquette's margin to 51-50 with about eight minutes left in the game. Lee scored twice to make it 59-54, but two baskets -by Detroit's Terry Duerod cut Marquette's margin to 61-58, set-. ting up Boyd's late heroics. Ellis led Marquette with 21 points and Lee added 18. Long had 20 and Duerod 16 for Detroit. -AP A she to altar NEW YORK .- The capture of Arthur Ashe by a pretty freelance photographer takes another of sport's eligible bache- lors out of circulation Sunday, leaving Broadway Joe Namath as chief of a vanishing breed. "We're going to have to have some im- provement over our performances of the last two or three to win," he admitted. Harvey hopes that the Wolverine's field event specialists and distance crew will score enough points to offset EMU's strong contingent of sprinters. In the meet, teams will collect points for the top six finishers in each event, and Harvey figures that the depth of the ? lue thinclads will come in. handy. "Since there will be such tough com- petition, we can't expect to go in and take a lot of first places," he noted. "With our depth, we should grab plen- ty of fourths, fifths and sixths, and that will make a difference. Running on their own track provides Michigan with another advantage. "We always run well here, and there should be a pretty good crowd cheering us on," said Harvey. Among the key individuals running for the Wolverine cause will be Doug Henni- gar in the sprints, defending champion Andy Johnson in the 1,000-yard run, and Jack Sinclair in both the mile and the three mile. The 5-11 guard netted 13 points and dished out 15 assists despite playing only 29 minutes.! His twisting layup with 1:34 remaining sealed Portland's fate after the Trail Blazers} cut a 15 point deficit to six and grabbed the momentum. "Kevin did a super job and kept us in the game" said Pis- ton coach Herb Brown. "We didn't play well in the first half, but we came back strong in the second half." Brown continued. "The bench' came through for us again." The teams were tied 28-28 after the first quarter and 61-61 at halftime. But in the third period, Detroit turned it t on and outscored the Blazers 35-29 as Lanier tallied 12 of his game high 25 points.
