Out of bounds BENTSEN HURTING Hoosier power wanes By HENRY ENGELHARDT Once upon a time the cry that the Indiana basketball tealn was in town would send shivers down the backs of polar bears. They no longer leap over tall buildings, not in one bound at least. That was last year. The Big Red Machine rolled with storm; trooper precision to a 32-0 season last year, copping an NCAA championship en route. Today they post an over- all, mark of 10-7 (4-3 Big Ten) and stand on the brink of elim- ination from snaring their fifth consecutive Big Ten title. AGE FINALLY caught up with the Hoosiers. Last year's players got too old for college ball and this year's players seem too young. to win a cham- pionship. You can pick up a shovel, but don't dig Indiana's grave just yet. Tonight at 8:05 in Crisler Arena the one returning starter, Kent Benson, 6-11, 245, will take his place at center court for the jump ball. But Benson, averaging just over 19 points and 11-plus re- bounds per game, is suffering from a back injury. If mountains were climbed with emotional drive, *the incensed Wolverines might stand on Mt. McKinley, or possibly Everest itself by gametime. Michigan (15-2 overall, 8-1 Big Ten) realizes that it was stripped of any cushion it may have held by losing last Satur- day in Evanston. The Wolver- ines also found out that losing a Big Ten game is not fun. There is also a little matter of paying Indiana back, for the Hoosiers have tripped the Wol- verines five straight times, dat- ing back to 1974. Most of the Michigan players have never beaten Indiana. BUT THERE is a definite feel- ing of this-is-the-time-to-do-it- fellas flowing from the Michigan locker room. "I think we'll beat them by 15 points," claimed "forward Joel Thompson. "It's a matter of pride." "I've never beaten Indiana," Minnesota is presently rated tenth in the nation. Johannesen views the Minne- sota meet with optimism since "they don't have their strongest lineup. They're still a darn tough team -and they almost beat Wisconsin. We will be tired from the night before." The Gophers are blessed with two spectacular wres- tlers, number one rated Mike McArthur at 118 pounds and Evan Johnson at 190. Also, Minnesota's Pat Neu (134) finished second in the Big Ten last year. McArthur's foe will be Todd Schneider, who looked tremen- dous against Johnnie Jones of +Iowa State. Johnson will have to face Harold King, who he has handled easily in the past. Neu will clash with Rich Lubell, who Neu dominated last year.
