E. of Platt Scientists link bacteria to Legionnaires disease By APand Reuter PEORIA, Ill - Researchers have found a tentative link be- tween a specific bacteria and the mysterious Legionnaires disease that killed 29 persons in Philadelphia last summer, a government spokesperson said yesterday. However, scientists and the national Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta say more study is needed before a definite link can be confirmed. IN A STATEMENT released through a U. S. Department of Agriculture research cented in Peoria, Dr. Leslie Page cau- tioned that the tests made on blood serum of persons who had the disease are prelimin- arry. (AP -The Fifth fnf Kent'ky bourbon is nearirg its final stand as a Sy'1hern tradition. Linqor is go- i rtric and sveral major giisti1cries clan to begin cn- v~rting in the next two weeks. If yo i et to buy a fifth, son yoi'll hP-e to ask for a 50 rr'lliliter." For a size si-,ilar to The quart; you'll have to say, "Give me a liter." IN THREE YEARS, there wo^t be fifths, quarts or half- gallon quantities of liquor - that's federal law. So you'll have to be familiar with the metric system to know what you're buying. Metric-size bottles have been legal containers since Oct. 1 and some already are on shelves in stores. Officials of Heaven Hill Dis- tillers, Inc., Glenmore Distiller- ies Co., James B. Beam Distil- ling Co. and Brown-Formati Dis- tillers Corp., all of Kentucky, plan to make the conversion to metric gradually, since the law gives them until Dec. 31, 1979, to make the switch. TOM MOR'GAN JR., a Glen- more executive, said the switch will cause some problems and a little confusion "until people become accustomed to it. "They look like they're about the same, because they are about the same,", he said of the popular fifth bottle and the new 750 milliliter size. The met- ric bottle will contain 25.4 ounc- es, while the fifth bottle holds 25.6 ounces. "There will be some expense involved, because you have to change your bottling equipment, and the labels, and so forth," he said. "We sell bourbon in every state and I think it's go- ing to be a little confusing for a while." WHEN YOU BUY a liter, the closest to a quart, it'll be a different story. "A quart is 32 ounces and a liter is 33-plus ounces, so when the people make the change they are obviously going to have to raise the price," said Max Shipira, a vice president of Heaven Hill. For the fifth, or 750 milliliter size, however, the price likely will be about the same, both men said. THE FEDERAL Bureau of Al- cohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which regulates the liquor in- dustry, has been pushing the switch to metric. The agency says reducing the number of bottle sizes from about 10 to six will result in savings in stor- age, inventory, bottling and rec- ord keeping. Morton, Shipira and other bourbon executives agreed, bu they said it will take years be- FnP.av inn renotice.
