DA t LY Page Three Priday, January 21, 1977 Fl-fE M1CH!~AN DAILY SOUTHERNER IN THE WHITE HOUSE: Drawl in v WASHINGTON (Reuter) - President Jimmy Carter brings a new sound to the White House: the rounded accent of southern speech where dropped Rs make' farmer come out "fomma" and Georgia "Jaw-ja." Suddenly, the southern drawl is the vogue in this capital city - a way of talking no longer ridiculed, and, in fact, very much to be emulated. CARTER'S is not quite t h e nasal twang of a Lyndon John- son, whose Texas inflection had him talking to "mah fellah Am- ericans" about the "Veet Nom" war. Nor, perhaps, does it have the linguistic pecularities of a Ken- nedy, whose Boston style had him in conflict with Fidel Cas- tro's "Cuber" in that crisis of! days "pahst."! Still, it is a speech like none other. THE SOUTHERN drawl, in earlier times, might have been scorned - particularly by those "damned Yankees" - as indi- cative of the cornball yokel giv- en to chewing "tobacckey." In Carter's case, however, the speech is something different: almost always grammatically correct and often somewhat clip- ped: the sound of a man on the move. For those not accustomed to Carterese, the following guide may prove useful: Ah - First person noun, as in Ah promise if elected. >gue -Jis - For emphasis, as in, Ah's jis a plain Jaw-ja fomma. -Pawful - What the Amer- ican President is: A pawful leader. -Dape - As opposed to shal- low; as in a dape commitment to something. -Gummint - The federal bur- eaucracy to which one brings a dape commitment. -Vurry - An adverb used for emphasis, as Ah'm vurry glad to be the leader of this pawful gummint. -Thank - To .meditate or ponder, as Ah thank this is a pawful important commitment. -Y'all - Every one of you. - Heah - As in, Y'll come, heah? THE ADMINISTRATOR of the; Cape Province, L. A.
