Carter's sneech wac interrupt- oid After the ceremony, Carter entered his long, bullet-proof, limousine for the ride to a solar- heated reviewing stand in front of the White House where he would view the three-hour in- augural parade. AS IF TO emphasize his de- sire to be a man of the people, however, Carter almost imme- diately left the car so that he and his wife, Rosalynn, could walk the 1.2-mile parade route in a crowd-pleasing stunt that must have left his ears ringing with cries of "Hi, Jimmy!" The President and his wife walked briskly hand-in-hand and were eventually joined in the stroll by their young daugh- ter, Amy. Vice-President Walter Mon- dale and his wife remained in their open-topped limousine for the parade, as did the full con- tingent of the Carter Cabinet, which preceded the Chief Exec- utive in the long parade. DESPITE THE cold, many nersons had waited hours for either the parade or the swear- ing-in ceremonies. The skies were clear and the sun shone all day. The temperatures were about ten degrees below normal for Washington this time of year. The celebration lasted all day, all night and into this morning's early hours with "parties" - not balls - at seven locations in the nation's capital. Thousands of Carter admirers spent $25 each to attend the parties, which did not require formal attire. Carter planned to visit all seven parties. Carter arrived in Washington yesterday - as the President- elect - at seven a.m. aboard an AMTRAK train dubbed "the Peanut Special." He then pro- ceeded to Blair House, the ex- ecutive -mansion across the street from the White House, and watched a sparsely-attend- ed prayer service at the Lincoln Memorial on television. After going to church, Carter and his wife walked to the White House for coffee and conversa- tion with the Fords. Ford, by mid-afternoon, how- ever, was far from the capital linelight. A helicopter lifted him off the Capitol Hill grounds after the swearing in ceremo- nies, then flew him over the parade route and above Wash- ington's landmarks for a view of waving citizens and the city where he had worked for the last quarter-century. He flew on to Andrews Air Force Base and from there to his new home in !
