The Michigan Daily-Saturday, September 10, 1977-Page 7 Nugent's rowdy rock By TIM YAGLE The Motor City Madman has done it again. Ted Nugent's latest album Cat Scratch Fever continues to unleash his brand of high-energized, frenzied, ear- splitting rock 'nroll. When Nugent is buying his defeaning music-making arsenal he says, "I try to get something which will give me the' raunchiest, most devastating sound known to man." He adds, "Just last week, we played the Kansas City Stadium and the police received com- plaints about the noise from people 15 miles away. That's what I look for." Nugent buys his equipment right here in Ann Arbor at Al Nalli's Music store. However, in a few months he will be en- dorsing Fender products and, thus, receive his gear gratis. Nugent began his ascention of rock's success ladder as a member of the Am- boy Dukes band in 1965 (they produced the hit single "Journey to the Center of Your Mind" which got the band es- tablished on the rock scene. The wild man then formed his own band in 1975 and hits like "Strangle- hold" and "Motor City Madhouse" (got the band rolling. FREE FOR ALL was the group's next release and hits like "Ham- mer'down," Dog Eat Dog," and the title cut flew high on the charts. Most of the tunes on Cat Scratch Fever are in a mold similar to the Free For All and Nugent LPs. So if you liked these two albums you're bound to like his latest. The title tune Cat Scratch Fever is a comparatively tame rocker that just glides along. Then a strangely titled, powerful tune "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" (don't ask me what it means commences the assault on the ears and gets the adrenalin flowing with Ted's stimulating guitar riffs. Death By Misadventure is a lively with a good beat and a swinging melody: The mid sections of this song sound similar to Bad Company's "Live for the Music." Then, in a great finale, Nugent soun- ds like he's out of control on "Out of Control." This song rocks your socks off with Nugent's guitar at its slashing best. It strengthens your craving for more which is why it shouldn't be the last cut on the disc. As one of the pioneers of heavymetal rock, Ted Nugent has attracted quite a following through the years with his fastpaced, energized, frantic music. Cat Scratch Fever does not breal the trend. With his hot brand of rock having been on numerous radio playlists even since his beginning, and Cat Scratch Fever doing well nation-wide, the Motor City Madman will continue to be a major force behind heavy rock for quite a while. ADDRESS, Zip Code By TIM YAGLE Rick Derringer and his band Der- ringer's new live album Derringer Live captures the raw power of this hard rock band in one of its explosive con- certs. Highlights of Derringer's musical career include working with Johnny Winter's band where he produced and wrote most of the songs, including the hit. "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" on Johnny Winter and in 1971. When winter quit performing, Der- ringer joined brother Edgar's group where he produced the smash album They Only Come Out at Night" ("Frankenstein" .,He was also Win- ter's lead guitarist. Most of the songs on Live are from Derringer's previous solo albums all receiving little to moderate FM airplay in Detroit. "Let Me In" and "Teenage Love Af- fair" give the loud and well-recorded LP a rousing start with Derringer's guitar in the spotlight, as it is through- out the disc. "Still Alive and Well" is a choppy tune with a somewhat bland lead gui- tar. "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" con- cludes this 40-minute Derringer concert in grand fashion with an extremely short but good taste of the Kinks classic "You Really Got Me" at the end. I had the privilege of experiencing a Derringer concert at Second Chance last month and his band put on a great show playing most of the songs from Derringer Live. Rick Derringer is one of rock's better guitarists and he really knows how to get a crowd rowdy with his yelling and manipulation of his guitar. This LP captures Derringerat his live best.
