Both the men's and women's gymnastic teams travel to Ypsilanti Saturday for their last team effort until 1978. The men's compulsory competition begins today at 4:30 in the gymnastic room of Michigan's I.M. building. Saturday's competi- tion at Eastern will start at 11:00 a.m. at Bowen field house for the women and at 2:00 p.m. at Warner Gymnasium for the men. A dual meet - in December is something new for the men tumblers. Usually, after the invitationals in November, they take December off to work on new tricks and polish up their routines. "I THINK it's a good idea to have this meet," said Carl Badger, spe- cialist ih horse and vaulting. "It keeps us in competition and will help keep us pushing." "It gives us a good chance to exper- iment," said Big Ten parallel bar champion John Corritore. "I'm going to put in a few new tricks and use a harder routine." Although on paper Michigan is stronger than Eastern, the meet won't be easy for the Wolverines, especially since all-around standouts Nigel Rothwell and Bruce Schuchard won't be seeing action. While Roth- well fights off illness and Schuchard nurses a sprained ankle, freshmen Paul Fischberg and Chris Van Mierlo will have their chance to keep the all-arounders in top form. "This should be a very tough meet. We're pulling out two good main- stays," said Michigan coach Newt Loken. "We anticipate some good competition, and we'll rise to the occasion. EASTERN'S TEAM is one of the best coach Mary Johnson has ever had, stated Loken. Johnson was the captain of the 1954 Michigan gym- nastic team under Coach Loken. The Hurons' six-man all-around squad is led by Dave and Jim Willoughby, Randy Allen, and Steve Lenart. "The meet will be very chal- lenging," said Johnson. "If we can beat them on any event it will be a plus for us." Prior to the men's meet, the women will compete in their first meet of the season against Eastern and Bowling Green. "Bowling Green will be the toughest for us, but Eastern is a much improved team from last year," said Michigan women's coach Anne Cornell. "And there are always lots of good recruits that we don't know about yet." The key for the tumblers will be getting through their routines with- out any breaks. "They're not hitting them all yet," said assistant coach Don McElreath. Endurance will also be a factor in Michigan's perform- ance, according to Cornell. THE GYMNASTS' growing confi- dence has been a factor in their im- provement over last year."This year the girls are throwing more of their own tricks without any spots," said McElreath. The tumblers are stronger on balance beam and uneven bars this year with freshmen Colleen Forres- tel and Katie Zobler adding depth. All-around Junior Olympic champion \l I I I .
