BLUE WINS HOME OPENER, 117-69

Cagers obliterate

Mike McGee
Record Blu
point total

By HENRY ENGELHARDT
Michigan sparkled and gleamed like
a diamond last night as it sucked the
blood from a rocky Eastern Michigan
squad.
In whomping the outmanned Hurons
117-69 Michigan set a Crisler Arena
scoring record, eclipsing the old record
set in a 113-101 victory over Minnesota
in 1968.
The Wolverines played near-flaw-
less ball in every phase of the game.
They followed wheels with deals,
shakes with bakes and missed shots
with tip-ins.
"We were worried we wouldn't be up
mentally," saidcoach Johnny Orr, "but
tonight was one of the best examples of
ei playing hard since I've been here."
Blue center Joel Thompson, the
game's high scorer with 22 agreed: "If
we always play with this intensity we'll
be tough to beat."j
3 20 The game was close for the first five
1 14 minutes, but after a Huron time out
1 22 Michigan came on as if the NCAA title
4 20 was at stake. In the next eight minutes
i 13 Michigan went from a 12-10 lead to a 40-
0 2 17 margin.
0 0 Freshman Mike McGee started to
0 4
1 4,pop from outside, Thompson started to
o s monopolize the boards and Alan Hardy
0 0 glided inside for some easy buckets.
2 0 McGee finished the night with 20
22 117 points and seven rebounds in 25 mm-

utes. "I told you Mike McGee was a
good player," said Orr. "He has great
speed and quickness. He drove past
that guy whenever he wanted."
Thompson combined 75 per cent ac-
curacy from the floor with nine re-
bounds and two blocked shots. "I'm a
lot more relaxed out there now," said
the lean leaper, "I don't have to worry
about making mistakes and coming
out."
Hardy hustled up and down the floor
collecting 14 points, seven boards and
limited the man he guarded, Kenny
Harmon, to but two points and one re-
bound.
All the meanwhile, guard Tommy
Staton was possibly having his finest
night in a gold and blue uniform. He had
20 points, 16 in the first half. He dealt

our four assists and pulled down six re-
bounds.
"Staton and McGee ran so hard they
got tired," noted Orr. "So we rested
them so they could go some more."
Dave Baxter scored only 10 points but
was credited with eight assists, which
seemed a conservative estimate. He
guided the Michigan fast break, which
at times was run in textbook fashion.
As for the Hurons, they were led by
Tony Jamison who took 23 shots, 13
more than any other member of his
team, and scored 19 points.
Huron coach Ray Scott, formerly
head honcho of the Detroit Pistons, was
unavailable for comment after the
game. He was locked inside the dress-
ing room with his team, trying to ab-
sorb this 48-point defeat.
"Our players know their players,"

EMU
explained Orr. "Some of their guys told
our guys they would run us out of our
own gym. It was a matter of pride."
The Wolverine bench, though some-
what more erratic than the starters,
played with great intensity. Two fresh-
man Johnny Johnson, the number one
sub, and Paul Heuerman were especi-
ally impressive.
Johnson clicked for 13 points and
stole the ball three times. Heuerman
plucked six rebounds and blocked two
shots.
Michigan is now 2-0, EMU drops to 0-
3. The Wolverines play next Saturday
afternoon in Madison Square Garden
against Fordham.
"We're not exactly Sisters of the
Poor, even without Hubbard," Orr ad-
mitted, "but when we don't play real
hard we're not a real good team."

Stetson
By The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore
guard Kelvin Ransey hit 22 points to
lead a balanced Ohio State scoring at-
tack to a 108-71 non-conference basket-
ball victory over Stetson last night.
The Buckeyes, now 3-0, hit the cen-
ury mark for the first time in four
easons in handing the Hatters their
eleond straight loss this season.
The other four double-figure scorers
for Ohio State were all freshmen. Car-
ter Scott had 19,.6-foot-11 Herb Williams
18, Todd Penn 11 and Jim Smith 10.
Stetson gave the tall, young Buckeyes
a 'game for the first nine minutes,
trailing only 22-20. Ohio State then hit
eight straight points and the Hatters
were never in the game after that.
Greg Guye hit 20 points and Kevin
Tucker added 19 for the visitors, who
trailed at halftime 48-37.
Ken Page, another heralded fresh-
man, sank a basket with 52 seconds left
to lift Ohio State to the century mark.
The last time the Buckeyes reached
that figure was in a 106-94 victory over
Penn in 1974.
