there to force the turnovers. And while the starters will be in excellent
condition for each game, you cannot expect them to be effective without
an occasional breather.
Enter the recruits. The Bodnars and Paul Heuerman will all see some
action. Maybe only three or four minutes a game while Hardy or Staton takes
a Oreather. But it won't be at the end of the game when Michigan has either
sewn up the game or is out of it.
This year substituting will be early and it will be depended on more.
And then there is the offensive aspect of the game to consider. Every
starter is a capable shooter. Staton is probably the weakest of the first five
and he's no slouch. But when a shooter goes cold you cannot afford to
leave him in the game. You have to insert someone who can sink a couple
of quick baskets, spur the team and then come out.
Enter Mike Robinson, Johnny Johnson and the others. Both Rob and
Johnson have a sweet touch. These guys will be depended on to bail out a
cold streak of shooting.
So this year you can't just memorize the numbers of the starting five.
Every winning team must have five definite starters, Michigan won't be
an exception. But this year Orr must effectively utilize all that bench talent
if he is to survive the loss of his All-American center.
After the '75-'76 cinderella season John Wooden commented on Orr's
ability.
"I was impressed by the way he could bring that third guard in there,"
he said. Well this year the substituting will involve more than the guards.
But the talent is there as is the coaching expertise. Whether it clicks
or not remains to be seen.
