Nobody will speculate when Hub- bard will be able to play. It's too early to say, as it depends on the healing and rehabilitation processes. The general feeling around the Michigan basketball camp is that w they're not going to rush anything. For now, the cagers are not planning on having Hub back this season. THIS IS Hubbard's first serious injury, and the consensus is the start of the injury came in late August over in Sophia, Bulgaria at the World University Games. "We were playing the Russians. I came down with a rebound and two dudes were on my back. There was a whole lot of pressure on my left leg," Hubbard said. "I fell and then got up and hobbled off the court. They didn't even have any ice around (at the game), so it swelled up later that night until we got some ice. "They checked it the next day and said there was a lot of swelling and there could be cartilage damage, but they couldn't tell. I had it checked when I got back from overseas, but they couldn't find anything wrong," Hubbard said. Back in the United States, reports came over about the fight between the Americans and the Cubans in the game on the following day. Many reports mistakenly said Hubbard was hurt in the skirmish. "We didn't know what the hell was going on, said assistant coach Bill Frieder. "He got injured the night before against the Russians. The papers wrote it all wrong. They said he was in the fight with the Cubans. He wasn't even there." THE FIRST Michigan practice was on October 17. Hub had practiced for about 15 minutes, when he came down after a rebound and gave a yell. Then he hobbled off the court, and moments later he exited to the locker room. "It felt all right (going into prac- tice). I just came down on it and it started hurting," Hubbard said. "It was different (than the pain he felt in Bulgaria). It just felt different, a different pain. O'Connor said they testedrHub's knee before he went into practice. "He had nurinal stregnth going into practice," he said. Are the two injuries related? "It's hard to say, but the injury in Bulgaria probably caused the weakening of the carti- lage," O'Connor said. So now Hubbard, who at one time was contemplating the leadership role for a possible Big Ten champion- ship team and was placed on most pre-season All-America teams, faces a non-basketball year. "I get up and go. I just can't sit around here (his apartment) and do nothing. That's life - I got hurt. Why should I sit around and mope?"
