I don't think they're accurate. I'm on the UPI rating board and I rate the teams. Maybe I know the two or three top teams, the rest of them are very difficult to rate. You can tell that by the magazines they put out. I don't know how a writer like you could tell me which teams are the best when you've never seen them. And most writers have never seen them, but they rate them. But that creates interest, and I think that's good. Some of the awards and that sort of thing, I don't think are that fair, but that isn't any of my concern. I have nothing to say about that, so it doesn't bother me. I'll tell you what: When you're picked number one, and you get a trophy like we got last year (for being selected the top team in the country in the AP and UPI Polls), that gives you great satisfaction as a coach because over the whole year we were the number one team in the nation and not just in the tourna- ment. We want to win the tourna- ment. But you have to be lucky to win U I I I I I I I I I I I 1 I I I I I Student Newspaper at The University of Michigan g---------- WRITE YOUR AD HERE! m- ------ m - i i I L I-- I I - I ---- ---- --C~lP ND ~ ll ODAY --- -.-- ---I I I I I I 1 I I U I I I I I I I I I I the tournament. Two years ago we were very lucky - we got into the finals and played some great basket- ball, and had things break our way. Last year, we played one bad half and we didn't get in there (the finals), we were defeated. But we were still one of the final eight teams in America and that isn't bad when you have 800 or 1000 teams playing basketball. I like the polls. I like them. They're a lot of controversy, they cause a lot of conversation, there's no question about that. But anyone that says that they don't want to be number one, they're not telling you the truth. THE DAILY: How do you feel the Big Ten will shape up now that Thompson and Winey from Minne- sota are both slated to return? ORR: Oh, I think like it was before - Purdue and Minnesota, they'd have to be the favorites. I think we would of been right in there. We were in all the polls until we lost Phil. I think you have to put Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin probably as the most improved teams. They should be very much improved over the past few years. Indiana and Michigan are both going to be good teams, strong teams, young teams. But we're the only schools that have won the. Big Ten the past six years and I think that's a psychological ad- vantage. Then you have Illinois and Iowa. I read they both think they're going to be much, much better. Northwestern lost Billy McKinney, but they feel they have a veteran team coming back and some very fine veterans. So, it looks like an awful tough league to me. Rob's shooting was nothing to speak of beyond eight feet. Yet he was effective enough close to the basket, setting a school record for career field goal per- centage (.550). You don't have to look far to find a better talent at forward. Rob was consistent and did what he could in terms of leadership.
