WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal
advisory panel says the government
should tell women who use birth
control pills to stop smoking because
the two together markedly increase
the risk of heart and circulatory
disease.
Dr. Edwin Oritz, director of the
Food and Drug Administration's
(FDA's) division responsible for
overseeing oral contraceptives, said
Friday the FDA may soon issue new
warnings about the effect of using the
pill and smoking.
THIS WEEK the Advisory Com-
mittee on Obstetrics and Gynecology
reviewed a number of scientific

studies on the issue of oral contracep-
tion and smoking, and then recom-
mended to the FDA that it require a
warning of possible dangers.
Each package of birth control pills,
the panel said, should include warn-
ipgs proclaiming: "Women who
smoke and who wish to use oral
contraceptives should be advised to
stop smoking."
The warning also should point out
that combining use of the pill with
smoking results in risks of serious
cardio-vascular side effects "es-
pecially in women older than 35," the
panel said,

annoyed by the bartender's fumble
were Buckeye fans Debbie Fair and
Sue Nash, both Ohio State, seniors
who came into town for the game but
were unable to buy tickets. Though
dressed defiantly in red and wearing
cowboy hats, the two women were ob-
viously not suffering from their pres-
ence in enemy territory.
"EVERYBODY'S been really
friendly," smiled Fair. She called the
TV programming "rotten", but
found solace in a mug of beer.
After less than 10 minutes of
watching the historic Arab-Israeli
meeting, the audience at Dooley's
threw up a cheer. Coverage of the
game had resumed - just in time for
them to watch the Buckeye forces
score their first field goal.

in Atlantic
crash,
FUNCHAL, Madeira (AP) - A
Portuguese jetliner carrying 156 pas-
sengers crashed and exploded while
landing at this Atlantic island yester-
day. Initial reports over government
television said at least 50 persons
were killed.
Witnesses at Santa Cruz Airport
said the crash ripped the three-
engined Boeing-727 apart on the
runway and hurled a section of the
craft into the ocean.
STORMY SEAS around this Portu-
guese island hampered rescue efforts
by police, firemen and navy person-
nel.
According to reports here and in
Lisbon, about 50 persons survived. A
spokesman at the district hospital in
Funchal said "many severely wound-
ed" persons were admitted to the
hospital. Flight controllers said
rain and 12-mph winds had cut visi-
bility to two-and-a-half miles when
the jet of Portugal's national airline
tried to land at 10 p.m. (5 p.m. EST).
TAP officials in Lisbon said the
plane carried 156 passengers and an
undetermined number of crew mem-
bers. -
They reported all 110 passengers
who boarded the flight in Lisbon were
believed to be Portuguese, but they
did not know the others' nationalities.
