MSU TO CRACK BIG TWO?
Boilers face

By DIANE SILVER
While today's Michigan-Ohio State game will
capture plenty of national attention, four league
battles still remain, each with its own point of
interest. Featured in the season finales will be some
of the most intense rivalries in the Big Ten along
with two intra-state clashes, the battle of the Old
Oaken Bucket and the final chance to climb in
conference standings.
The Old Oaken Bucket, a symbol of football
supremacy between instate rivals Indiana and Pur-
due, is at stake today, when the teams clash at
Bloomington. Both the Hoosiers and the Boiler-
makers need to win this game to finish with a win-
ning season.
THE rEAMS COULD not be more evenly mat-
ched. The stats show IU ranked eighth and third in
rush and pass defense respecitvely, while the
Boilers are seventh and fourth in the same
categories. Total offense is close, too, with Purdue
at 341.6 yards and Indiana at 334.3.
More than just the statistics show striking
similarities between Purdue and Indiana. Both
have scored exactly the same number of points in
seven Big Ten games-127-and both yielded 31
points in losses to national powers. In 10-game
statistics, Purdue has scored 221 points to Indiana's
184, and defensively, the Boilers permitted 226 poin-
ts to the Hoosiers' 218.
"Every game is important," said Indiana coach
Lee Corso, "but there's a lot of emphasis put on this
one because of the rivalry and the Old Oaken
Bucket. There's more excitement around here, a lot
of electricity in the air.""

WITH A WIN over Iowa today plus a Michigan
loss, Michigan State would break up the perennial
'Big Two" combination. Not since Northwestern
turned the trick in 1971 has any team been able to
break the Michigan-Ohio State logjam.-.
The Spartans have used a mixture of running and
passing to spark their four game winning streak.
MSU is averaging 100 yards per game more than
Iowa, but the defenses are about even statistically.
yr G TP ,
o** °
"Iowa plays extremely aggressive defense," said
MSU coach Darryl Rogers. "Our offense is going to
get a real test to moving the ball."
Illinois will be trying to shake a three game losing
streak, while Northwestern will attempt to end its
frustrating season on a positive note, in an intra-
state battle at Evanston.

INJURIES HAVE BEEN a major problem for
departing Wildcat coach John Pont, especially at
quarterback where six different people have lined
up behind center this season. Junior Scott Stranski
is listed as number one this week after injuries en-
ded the year for Dana Hemphill.
Illini quarterback Kurt Steger will be gunning for
school records in career passing yards and total of-
fense. With just 20 more passing yards Steger will
break the current record of 2,750 held by Mike
Wells. Steger also needs 81 yards to tie the Illini
total offense mark of 3,204 yards.
Wisconsin will close out the 1977 season at Min-
nesota, in a game that will mark the end of the John
Jardine coaching era at Wisconsin. The Badgers
will try to give Jardine a final win over their most
heated rival, the Gophers, a team in search of their
best record (7-4) since 1973.
MINNESOTA SPORTS a 3-1 record this season
over the four teams still in contention for 1978 Rose
Bowl bids. The Gophers trimmed UCLA and
Washington, both in the running for the Pac-Eight
bid, and blanked previously number one ranked
Michigan. Ohio State dealt the Gophers a 38-7 set-
back in Ohio Stadium.
Jardine describes Minnesota as a tough, very
physcial football team. "They've jelled offensively,
and they are good defensively," said Jardine.
Gopher coach Cal Stoll said about his team,.
"These men want to go out winners, but it will not be
easy. Wisconsin wants the very same thing for
themselves, their coach and school. Simply stated,
it should be another great, battle in our long and
traditional series."

SMALL CHANGE
Director-FRANCOISE TRUFFAUT (1976)
Truffaut's warm, wonderful exploration of childhood from the brave
curiosity of a toddler to the excitement and embarrassment of .ado-
lescent love. There's a notable reference to THE 400 blows (his auto-
biographical first film) in this portrayal of a lonely, battered child.
