Page 16-Friday, September 9, 1977-The Michigan Daily University of Michigan GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY MASSAMEETING for December 7-10 production of PATIENCE, Sun., Sept. 11-8:00 P.M. MICHIGAN UNION Singers, Sewers, Orchestra, Builders, Set Crew, etc. Illinois previewed By PAUL CAMPBELL "I like to throw the ball." So says the new Illinois football coach, Gary Moeller. Wait a second. Isn't this the same man who played for Woody Hayes'and coached for Bo Schembechler? Didn't he learn anything from those two demigogues of the ground game? is he a closet aerial freak? BEFORE YOU START WONDERING, read the rest of the quote: ".. . if you can throw the ball. However, I don't think that you're going to find a suc- cessful team that throws the ball all the time because that's not the way you win football games. The key to winning in the Big Ten is tough defense." But if, as Moeller says, defense is the key to winning, he has his work cut out for him. The coach whose Michigan units yielded the fewest points in the nation in 1974 and 1976 inherits a squad with only five returning lettermen from a team that surrendered an average of 23 points to its conference foes. MOE LLER HAS INSTALLED a 5-2 system at Illinois and hopes to build his line around two veteran linemen named Jim Kogut and Bruce Thornton. Moeller displayed his preference for quickness and agility when he tabbed senior Brian Kingsbury (5-11, 204 as his starting middle guard. The man Moeller and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton (a 26-year-old Yp- silanti native who worked under Moeller at Michigan as a graduate assistant are asking the most of is linebacker John Sullivan. Sullivan, a senior from Long Island, had 141 tackles in 1975 but missed nine games last year with torn knee ligaments. He returns as the captain this season and is countedyon to fill the void left by the departure of all Big-Tenner Scott Studwell. THE MOST EXPERIENCED GROUP is the secondary, where three of the four starters have game experience. Safety Dale Hardy and rover Rickie Mit- chem tied for third last year with 72 tackles each. Senior David Blakely from Detroit Northwestern and 4.5-forty man Derwin Tucker will man the corners. Six lettermen are back on offense, including an experienced returnee at each of the skill positions. Quarterback Kurt Steger threw for 1,243 yards and 10 TDs last year and needs only 359 yards to cop number one on the school's all- time. list. STEGER ISN'T A RUNNEL, however. When yards are needed on the ground Steger's main man will be tailback James Coleman. He was the team's top rusher last year with 687 yards. He will be joined by junior fullback Charlie Weber, who won the job with an 83-yard performance in the spring game. Coin Laundry MR.
