dcespite,
no-smoke
plea
By MARK PARRENT
Yesterday was the day the Ameri-
can Cancer Society urged people to
set aside theircigarettes,but Ann
Arborites were living proof that
despite its forlorn warnings, the
Society's directive went up in a
billowy cloud of smoke.
Seems as though folks around here
can't refrain from lighting up - even
for a day.
"WE SOLD about the same number
of cigarettes as usual," said Woody
Wilson, an employe of Tice's, the
small State Street grocery store.
Sliding -a Newport Light out of its
package, Wilson related his own
inability to abstain from the habit for
even 24 hours. "I just couldn't hack
it," he said.
Owner Bill Tice said the store sells
"about 100 cartons a day" and
yesterday's sales were just about
normal.
"I couldn't stop either," said a cus-
tomer as she hurried out the door
clutching her freshly purchased
pack.
Cottage Inn, Heidelberg, Brown
ug and many other area restaurants
11 reported near-normal customer
moking.
VILLAGE BELL manager Dick
otz, however, noted a significant
rop in the smoking habits of his cus-
omers. "Many people are not smok-
ng today, it is definitely below nor-
al. I haven't sold a single package
>f cigarettes yet today," he lamented
esterday afternoon.
Puffing away while reading in the
nion lobby, sophomore Peter Reed
laimed ignorance of the special
on-smoking day. Even when in-
ormed of the day's significance,
eed refused to quit inhaling'the tar
nd nicotine.
"I've already started today," he
aid defensively.
Trolley
idea nixed
by AATA
rCnntiniud from Page 1)
PEAR CITED several reasons for
his negative vote, including the AATA's
200,000 operating deficit and trolley
inancing as well as traffic problems
nvolved in the mutual operation of the
rolley.
Three years ago, Liberty Street un-
lerwent a facelifting which included its
repaving, the removal of overhead
ires, and the planting of trees.
The study recommended that one
rolley line run on the north side of
iberty from State Street to Ashley,
nd a second trolley route run on the
ast side of Fourth Avenue from Liber-
y to Catherine. The proposed trolley
ystem would connect the city's three
usiness districts-State Street, Main
treet and the Kerrytown/Farmer's
arket areas.
BOARD MEMBER Willie Horton, a
ember of a local trolley group, poin-
ed out that $3,000 was left in federal
honey for the second half of the study
nd would not cost the AATA anything.
"It's not implementing the trolley,"
Horton said. "I don't see any reason to
kill the study." He added the study's
second part would further detail
operating and construction costs.
A bus line circulator is planned for
the downtown area that would connect
the three business districts.
