SQUEEJUNS come in styles for MEN and WOMEN. By PAUL CAMPBELL Special toThe Daily DETROIT-Maybe the Tigers knew what was going to happen in their makeup game with Baltimore yester- day and decided to keep it a secret. For their part, the 1969 (that's people, not years) fans who did show up will surely keep the secret. Their tea'm managed only four hits off of Oriole ace Jim Palmer and lost 4-0 in the finale of a long six game series. Not much to talk about. For six innings, it was a good old- fashioned scoreless pitching duel be- tween Palmer and Detroit starter Bob Sykes. Palmer's control was superb, while Sykes allowed at least one man to reach base every inning but. kept pulling himself out of jams. But the Orioles offense, which destroyed Tiger pitching with 73 hits in the series, came alive to produce four runs and eight hits in the last three frames. The first run of the game came in the Baltimore seventh. Sykes walked Doug DeCinces with one out. The third baseman stole second on the first pitch and promptly scored when Mark Belanger singled sharply to left. Belanger finished the day with three hits biut was outdone by his double play partnArookie second baseman Rich Dauer. -a'er collected four singles. Dauer scored the second run in the eighth. He led off with a single, advan- ced to third on two infield outs, and crossed the plate when Lee May pun- ched a single to right. In the ninth, DeCinces smashed a two-run homer into the lower deck in left to round out the scoring. Palmer, meanwhile, continued to baffle the Bengal batsmen. If it wasn't for Jasor Thompson's two-out double in the seventh, the Tigers would have gone the whole game without getting a man to second base. The tiny crowd, which belied its size with boisterous yells and derisive boos directed at Tiger manager Ralph Houk, seemed to enjoy the pleasant afternoon despite the outcome of the game. Things loosened up right away when Baltimore leadoff batter Elliott Mad- dox lost hold of his bat on the second i Second baseman Tito Fuentes canwe within one of tying the American League putout record for a second baseman in yesterday's game. His in- field teammates helped by starting three double plays ... The long wait for the arrival of the Tiger infield hopes for. the future, shortstop Alan Trammel- and second baseman "Sweet" Lod: Whitaker, is over. Both were in uniform for yesterday's game. The pair led Montgomery (AA) to the Southern League championship for the, second straight year.. .. Whitaker was hittirig .277 in Montgomery, Trammell .297 with a circuit record of 19 triples ... Ron LeFlore sat out yesterday's gare .with a slight muscle pull, but is expec ted back for the Boston series.. . The centerfielder has a 17-game hitting streak and needs only three mare to, pass Pat Kelly of Baltimore for thg longest skein of the year in the AL, an honor he achieved last year with his 3 game streak. It sailed into the'field seats and struck a portly patron. No harm was done, and the fans roared their approval when Maddox insisted his victim be given a bat to take home. Though only one fan went home with a major leaguer's bat, it seemed at times that the batters were determined to give each and every fan a chance to take home a foul ball. One half inning saw 23 balls sail foul into the stands. The Tigers now head to Boston to open a four game series. They face their third doubleheader in five days tonight. .Houk plans to send Dav Rozema and Steve Grilli to the mound against Luis Tiant and Reggie Cleveland.
