Arabs, Israelis clash at MLB - But don 'tfret, it's only a game , By R. J. SMITH Some earthshaking advancements and setbacks in the Mideast situation transpired yesterday afternoon. A U.S. ambassador to Lebanon .was kidnapped and Andrew Young of- fered to make the U.S.S.R. Amer- ica's most favored country in trade in exchange for ratification of the "Caradon resolution." An Arabian envoy was assassinated when he pro- tected a young nurse in his bedroom from bomb shrapnel. And, oh yes - it was leaked from a top secret negotia- tion that Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin was "in danger of losing his accent. If all that seems strange, try to swallow this: Everything took place in the basement of our very own Modern Language Building. + into the individual nations of the Middle East, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Once the students decided who would get to play such luminaries as Moshe Dayan, Andrew Young and King Hussein, the class was able to strive toward the goal of the game - nothing much, really, just the achievement of peace and harmony in the Mideast. For the class, the game is not just for play. It is used as preparation for exams, and the students spent a great deal of time preparing for the simulated clash. PROF. FRED Goodman, who at- tended the event, explained that it is more than just a tool for passing exams. "It's an inexpensive alternative to studying abroad . . . it forces one to learn things," he said. "Once you've played the Prime Minister of Syria, you'll never read the New York Times, Newsweek, The Free Press or anything else the same. You'll never pass those words without re-thinking." _THE PARTICIPANTS spent. the afternoon simulating sovereign na- tions, issuing demands, engaging in covert operations, and mastering diplomatic double-talk. Just like in the real world, one "Saudi Arabian" put it, "The problem is one of com- munication." In two weeks, another section of the class will lend its hand at steady- ing the Arab-Israeli conflict, but this time with an important distinction: The students will be assisted by a computer. "We're looking for the day when people here are playing Left Bank, and people at MIT are playing Syria - it doesn't need to be face to face," explained Goodman of the comput- er's significance. AMIDST ALL the turmoil of robed sheiks and suede-suited, cigar-smok- ing exporters, and despite the raised voices and angry rhetoric, a common element of enthusiasm and dedica- tion propelled the students toward their goal of Mid-East stability. "There is probably nobody on this: floor who knows the score of the Purdue-Michigan game," said Goo man. "There are very few pocket3 U people in Ann Arbor where that is true."
