Payroll not cut by abortion deadlock (Continued from Page 1) and the Senate turned down its committee's recommendation and gave approval to the payroll resolu- tion. IN EXCHANGE for that approval, House leaders promised to "do everything possible to work out an agreement" over the abortion dis- pute, said Sen. Warren Magnuson (D-Wash.). The paycheck resolution, which passed on a voice vote, was the second of its kind that Congress has passed this year because of the deadlock over abortion policy. Magnuson and Sen. Edward Brooke (R-Mass.), the chairman and ranking Republican on an appropria- tions subcommittee, conferred with House Speaker Thomas O'Neill and other House leaders. "THEY ASSURED us over at the House that if we'll go ahead and not amend this resolution . . . they'll just do everything possible to work out an agreement on this," Magnuson said afterwards. Brooke predicted that the final abortion agreement the House and Senate eventually reach will be "something very close to the Senate language." UNIVERSITY CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 409 S. D CONGRESS HAS authorized a study of saccharin, its health effects, and the health benefits of saccharin and other non-nutritive sweeteners during the 18-month period. The measure also calls for a study of the practice of using laboratory test animals to. determine whether sub- stances may cause cancer, in hu- mans. The House voted Thursday to approve the report of a House-Senate committee which worked out differ- ences in legislation passed earlier this year. The Senate added its approval by voice vote yesterday. The compromise calls for this warning label on products containing saccharin: "Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin which has been determined to cause cancer; in laboratory animals."e TiE BILL also requires owners of grocery stores and other retail food stores to display signs telling con- sumers about the information on the warning labels. The secretary of Health, Education and Welfare is also authorized to prepare similar information for res- taurnats, but may not require owners to provide the information to custom- ers. The secretary also is authorized to require warning labels on vending machines dispensing products con- taining saccharin. The Foodand Drug Adininistration acted earlier this year to ban the sale of saccharin after the publication of the results of Canadian tests showing the substance caused bladder cancer in the second generation of labora tory rats. The decision touched off a storm or protest from diabetics and weight- watchers who rely on saccharin in their diets. Daily Official Bulletin Saturday.
