Soluk boasts a glittering record: Women cv By BILLY NEFF Enthusiasm is the best way to de- scribe Gloria Soluk's approach to coaching women's basketball here at Michigan. This enthusiasm has cer- tainly rubbed off on her players as they whooped it up at practice yesterday. "We're going to try and make basketball exciting here," comment- ed the affable Soluk. She continued, "I invite everybody to come and see us; I feel that if they come and see us once, they will come again." SOLUK SEES this year's team as being "very aggressive. We're going to run and press. We'd like our fast break to be compared with the men's." The future women's softball coach here at Michigan laments, however, the absence of "a big center. We don't have someone who can domin- ate the backboards at both ends." So- luk would like to combat these defi- ciencies with "improved defense and conditioning. Conditioning is what wins basketball games so we're con- centrating on that," the ladies' mentor said. BUT WHY would a woman want to leave team with a 17-7 slate (Wayne. State) to. come to one with an 8-15 -nark last year? "I love Michigan, I did my master's degree work here; I think it ,(Michigan) will be the No. 1, college in women's athletics soon and I want to be a part of it," exclaimed Soluk. She was quick to add that "it is easy to recruit kids to a great place igers a re er like this and I like working with intel- ligent kids - this is certainly the place for that." If the women cagers wanted a winning tradition brought to them, they surely found the right person. Soluk compiled a 45-20 record during her three years as coach of the Wayne State Tartars. PREVIOUS TO that, she met with even more success'while coaching at Hamtramck St. Ladislaus 'High School, where her contingents gar- nered an incredible five Class A championships and back-to-back state championships in 1973 and 1974. During that time, she had a com- bined 114-13 won-loss record. As one girl was heard saying, "She's got us back down to funda- mentals; she really knows her stuff, not like last year." Someone listening interjected, "A lot of girls didn't try out last year because of the coach (Carmel Bor- ders)." Soluk stated, "We don't like to talk about what went on last year." SOLUK DIDN'T; as she had enough to talk about with this year's cage quintet. She was bubbling over with praise of two fine freshpersons, Abby Currier, from a state cham- pionship Lake City five, and Brenda Ven Hoosen from Marine City. "The kids who played last year are really going to be outstanding,'' Soluk boasted. She then proceeded to name off her two scholarship play- ers, Linda Gardner and Terri Conlin, and a cast of thousands. Included itusias tic among these were center Natasha Cender, forward Karen Gilhooly, Jean Otto, Denice Camaron, Sara Smolensky and Sheila Young. Soluk foresees the main competi- tion locally for the Wolverines will be her old girls from Wayne State ("a lot of my heart is invested in those girls."), Michigan State and Western Michigan. HER GOALS for the upcoming campaign are numerous. "We would like to win the Big 10 tourna- ment, the state tournament, and eventually, the national tourna- ment." Yesterday, Soluk was up for elec- tion for sportswoman of the year in the Detroit area. The award honors the person who has done outstanding work for the community. She suf- fered one of her rare defeats. By the way,' the incredible motor mouth from the University of Detroit, Dick Vitale won the men's award. .For the enthusiastic woman from Wayne State, success should again be waiting in the wings.
