Wharton ends reign
at MSU; on to NY

EAST LANSING (UPI) - In a
unique show of emotion, Michigan
State University President Clifton
Wharton announced yesterday that
he is leaving MSU to become
chancellor of the 64-campus State
University of New York.

THE Harvard-educated Boston na-
tive was the first black to be named
president of a major American uni-
versity.
Although SUNY is the largest
university system in the nation,
Wharton will lie taking a pay cut by
leaving MSU. Michigan State cur-
rently pays Wharton $65,000 a year,
compared with the $57,650 he will
earn in New York.
"The excitement and challenge of
heading the higher education system
of the nation's second largest state
made the offer of the SUNY Board of
Trustees too attractive to reject,"
Wharton told a press conference, his
voice so choked with emotion that he
had to stop repeatedly to compose
himself.
Wharton said his departure date
from the 44,000-student Big Ten
school has not yet been finalized,.but
it likely will not be until early 1978.
Patricia Carrigan, head of the
MSU Board of Trustees, said an
acting president will likely be ap-
pointed to fill Wharton's job, pending
selection of a permanent president.

Ehrlichman appears
before parole board

SAFFORD, Ariz. (AP) - Former
presidential aide John Erlichman,
convicted of conspiracy in the Water-
gate cover-up, will appear before a
parole board today, one year after he
began serving an original eight-year
term.
Hearing officers Harry Dwyer and
Fred Bowersox of the U.S. Parole
Commission will review a report by
officials of the Swift Trail Federal
Prison camp before interviewing Er-
lichman for 30 to 45 minutes.
Ben Brown, assistant warden at
the prison camp in southeast Ari-
zona, refused to disclose the contents
of the prison's parole report.
"He's doing well here," Brown
said. "He's made a good adjustment
as expected."
Erlichman was convicted, along
with former White House chief of
staff H.R. Haldeman and former
Atty. Gen. John Mitchell, of conspir-
ing to cover up White House involve-

doctor's office.
Federal judges reduced the senten-
ces from a possible maximum of
eight years down to as little as one
year, making him eligible for parole.
