Page 12-Tuesday, October 25, 1977-The Michigan Daily THOMPSON WINEY SUSPENDED Gopher trouble MINNEAPOLIS-A university of Minnesota committee reversed itself yesterday and voted to declare Big Ten scoring champion Michael Thom- pson and Dave Winey ineligible. THE NCAA on Oct. 21, 1976, had placed the entire mens' athletic program on probation because the university had refused to declare the two basket- ball players ineligible. The university said the penalties were too harsh and 0 took the issue to court. The sanctions imposed by the NCAA bars all men's teams from post- season play and NCAA-sponsored televisipn appearances. The resolution, approved on a 9-5 vote, directs the university to appeal the ineligibility of Thompson and Winey to the NCAA and also asks the NCAA to immediately lift its probation on all mens' sports. Members of the Assembly committee said the fact that the Gopher foot- ball team had upset undefeated Michigan Saturday and could be in line for a bowl appearance was not a factor in reversing their vote of 17 months ago. COMMITTEE MEMBERS said they had discussed the issues with the NCAA staff but were informed that ther could be "no horse trading" until the university took the first step and declared the players ineligible. Both Thompson and Winey are seniors. The 6-foot-10 Thompson holds most of the Gopher career scoring records and last year led the Big Ten in scoring with 410 points in 18 games. Thompson was charged by the NCAA with selling complimentary season basketball tickets for more than their face value. Winey was alleged to have accepted free lodging from a university booster at a Wisconsin lake cabin during two school holidays. -.P .................' LANIER PACES 100-85 WIN Pistons turn By JAMIE TURNER Special to The Daily; DETROIT - The Detroit Pistons overcame a poor shooting perform- ance to defeat the winless Boston Cel- tics, 100-85, last night at Cobo Arena. Bob Lanier led Detroit with 33 points. Nineteen of them came in the second half when he took things into his own hands. "Herb (Brown) said for me to look for my shots," commented the Piston captain, "and that I was passing off when I should be shooting." The Pistons were lackluster in the first half as they netted only'sixteen points in the second quarter to fall be- hind 49-42. Aided by guard Eric Money's 24 points and the force of Lanier's will, the Pistons totally shut down Boston in the third quarter. While Money and Lanier controlled the offense, Chris Ford and Marvin Barnes intimidated the Celts. Boston could only collect nine points. "We have to establish ourselves as a defensive team," added Carr. Detroit didn't need much help. Boston shot only 36% from the field and turned the ball over 22 times. Boston coach Tom Heinsohn was highly critical of his team. Ceits green "We played well enough in the first Lanier said, "usually they keep half, then rolled over and died," said coming at you but right now, they're Heinsohn," we didn't want to win the not doing that." game and we played dumb, non-- The Pistons are now 3-2 while hustling basketball."
