The No. 5-rated Buckeyes out- muscled Iowa on defense, picking off three passes to raise their season total to 16 interceptions, tops in the nation. Janakievski opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Gerald raced 44 yards for a touchdown midway through the second period, and Janakievski kicked a 28- yarder as time ran out in the half to give the Buckeyes a 13-0 halftime lead. Gerald went around right end for a two-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and Campbell bowled two yards for a touchdown midway through the last period. 0 Illini down Purdue WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Quar- terback Mike McCray scored from the one-yard line and completed a two- point conversion pass to James Cole- man with 3:18 to play yesterday, giving Illinois a 29-22 victory over Purdue. Freshman Dave Finzer kicked field goals of 53, 22 and 32 yards,,and McCray passed six yards to Tom Schooley for a touchdown to push Illinois to a 15-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Boilermakers rallied to take a 22- 15 advantage, but Illinois scored two more touchdowns in the second half which provided the victory margin. Illinois had to withstand a drive by Purdue in the closing seconds, with Bob Scott-making Illinois' third interception of a Mark Herrman pass in the end zone with just seconds remaining to pre- serve the triumph. Herrmann, who passed for 260 yards, had directed the Boilermakers from their own 20 in a final drive that covered 11 plays in less than three min- utes. Three plays before Scott's intercep- tion, Mike Brown evaded Illinois de- fenders but dropped a Herrmann pass on the 4-yard line. State, Hoosiers tie BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Tackle John Malinoski recovered a fumble by team- mate Steve Smith yin the Indiana end zone for a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining yesterday, and Hans Nielsen's extra-point kick gave Michigan. State a 13-13 tie with the Hoosiers irran error-filled game., The Hoosiers had taken a 13-6 lead four minutes earlier on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Scott Arnett to Markus Hardy, but Spartan quarter- back Ed Smith directed an 80-yard drive and set up the typing touchdown with a 27-yard pass to Barry Harris at the one. Steve Smith then took the. ball but fumbled and Malinoski pounced on it in the end zone. The Hoosiers, trying to beat Michigan State for the first time since 1969, made a last'-ditch effort to pull out the victory. Arnett guided them to mid-field with time running out but a long pass was in- tercepted by Jim Burroughs at the Spartan 5-yard line with 18 seconds re- maining. Michigan State then ran out the clock. Gophers slither on MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Sopho- more Paul Rogind kicked two field goals and quarterback Marc Trestman ran for a touchdown as the Minnesota Gophers notched their first Big Ten football victory, 13-7 over winless Nor- thwestern, yesterday. Rogind kicked field goals of 44 and 33 yards, following Wildcat fumbles and the Gophers turned their only sustained drive into a first-half touchdown.
