But, Atwood added, this year's edition was still a much better team than the 1976 squad. "Last year we really only had, one quality tennis player at Michigan," said Atwood. "This year there were three, and next season we expect to have five nationally ranked players." The one top woman that com- peted for the Wolverines in 1977 is junior Barb Selden. Selden's aggressive, determined g a m e made her the best player on the team for much of last season. Only two times in 21 attempts did she walk off the court a loser. Selden' doubles partner, sophomore Kathy Karzen, also had a fine year. Competing at. WE STYLE HAIR. WE DON'T JUST CUT IT!!! In between Kathy and Jerry is Jan, who graduated in May after four years of com- peting for the women's tedm., Jan has seen the changes that have come over the women's program in the last few years. "It used to be so disorgan- ized," recalled the elder Karzen sister. "Half the people might not show up at practice-no one was really into the team. "But since John came things have become a lot more ser- ious. He demands a Aot from his players and he has instill- ed some sense of common pur- pose." Anne Kercher, who went 10-11 at number three singles, will join Karzen and Selden as the best of the returnees next year. Experienced depth will be added by the return of juniors Missy Pollock and Jody Strom. But they will have to fight for chances to play, because Atwood has recruited three nationally ranked high school players. Coming into the Wolverine fold will be Whit Stodghill of Louisville, Kentucky, Cathy Kri- ckstein of Grosse Pointe, Mich- igan, and Susan Weber of Res- ton, Virginia. * * * Cagers hope to improve By GARY KICINSKI If it's true that big things come' in small packages, then the 1977-78 edition of Michigan womens basketball team should improve significantly over its record of 8-15 from last season. The women cagers, small by comparison to the men's team and most other women's teams, face several obstacles in trying to achieve a winning record. The first obstacle is finding the right replacement for star guard Lydia Sims, who has graduated. Sims, the quarter- back of the women's offense, led the team in scoring and assists for the past two years. "We'll miss Lydia," said sen- ior captain Terry Conlin. "She was a great leader and a great athlete." U athlete.'s adidlas shop Another void needs to be filled with the departure of two other guards, Carol Klomparens and Melinda Fertig, who have gradu- ated and transferred, respective- ly. Battling it out for the vacant starting positions will be Denise Cameron, a 5-6 junior from Chi- cago; Jean Otto, a 5-4 sopho- more from Farmington; and Peggy Kopmeyer, a 5-5 sopho- more from Cincinnati. The cagers, who started fair- ly strong last year but lost eight of their last nine games, must also play around the stumbling block of working under a new coach. Last year's coaches, Carmel Borders and Jane Bennett, will not he returning. As of early June, the new coaches had not been selected. Captain Conlin says the team's strong point is its depth at for- ward and center. Conlin, a 5-1 hometown product, is expected to retain her starting spot on the front line. Known for her re- bounding ability, Conlin will be playing with the varsity for her fourth year. Experience is also the mark of the other women at forward and center. The forward positioni in- cludes two other seniors, 5-6 Sheila Butler and 5-10 Linda Gardner. Five-nine sophomore Karen Gilhoody, who played her high school ball with Jean Otto at Our Lady of Mercy High in Farmington, could very well break into the start- ing lineup. The center duties were split last year between Natasha Cen- der an 6-2 junior Kathy Young, who Conlin says has "great jumping ability." Conlin pointed out that nobody has a solid lock on a position, which should make for a very competitive team. "Last year anyone could be put in at any time and would do a good job," said Conlin."
