he Michigan Daily-Saturday, October 1, 1977-Page eventis and entertainment Happenings . . . 0 for the week of all week COMMERCIAL CINEMA Network (Michigan) *** A nicely written, skillfully acted "cinema of the absurd," Network tells the story of Howard Beale, a TV news anchorman who becomes the "mad prophet of the airwaves" after being put on the Nielsen chopping block. The film's hu- mor is' biting and cynical but writer Paddy Chayevsky fails to invest the film with any warmth. Greased Lightning (State) *** Good natured film about the first black race- car driver, Wendell Scott. Richard Pryor plays Scott convincingly with al- ternating touches of humor and pathos. International Animation Festival (Campus) **% A mixed bag of ani- mation shorts from around the world. Some classics including the incompar- able example of clay pixillation, Closed Mondays, are featured along with an assortment of duds. MacArthur (Fox Village) **1/z Well- meaning, solidly acted film portraying the late general's life from World War II through his firing by Truman during the Korean War. Gregory Peck's per- formance in the title role is somewhat stilted. Interesting as an historical doc- ument, unexceptional as a work of cine- matic art. Star Wars (Briarwood) **** George Lucas' breathtaking tale of interstellar warfare. Some of the acting is pretty poor but who the hell cares? I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (Briarwood) **1/2 Kathleen Quinlan gives a bravura performance as a schizophrenic girl waged in a struggle with psychic demons responsible for her troubles. Good performances and film are marred by 'stereotyped diaracters and a -phony happy ending. The Last Remake of Beau Geste ( riarwood) *** Marty Feldman direc- tjd and stars in this madcap comedy hich pokes fun at the 1939 William Wellman film. Although somewhat de- rivative of mentor Mel Brooks' paro- dies, Feldman has fashioned a film with several sparks of brilliance. The stellar cast includes Peter Ustinov, Ann-Mar- garet, and Michael York as Feldman's twin brother. In the Realm of the Senses (Fifth Forum) **% Japanese director Nagisa Oshima's film has many facets - i- triguing, repulsive, bizzare, and, strangely enough, monotonous. Senses, though based on an incredible true story, eimerges, as ,an~ernotdoless, stati film despite its 4 dore explic- itne s. * * * saturday October 1 CINEMA The Story of Adele H (Old A & D Building 7, 9:05) **1/2 Slow-moving, un- involving story of Adele Hugo, daughter of Victor Hugo, and her obsessive and unrequited love 'or a British lieutenant. Isabelle Adjanni in the title role offers an excellent interpretation of the role but the character as written by director Francois Truffaut is almost unsym- pathetic and-unidentifiable. Silent Movie (MLB 3, 7, 8:40, 10:15) ***1/z Mel Brooks' parody/homage to the cinema of yesterday stars himself, Marty Feldom, and Dom DeLuise and features a host of superstar cameos. Silent Movie is an innovative pastiche of superb gags. The Producers and The Twelve Chairs (Nat Sci Aud Producers 8:30 only, Chairs 7, 10:15) ** More Mel Brooks craziness. Not as innovative as later Brooks efforts, but both films fea- ture some incredibly hilarious scenes along with beautiful comedic perform- aices. And Now For Something Completely Different (Angell Aud A 7, ) **1/ Frag- rlented, sometimes tasteless series of Monty Python's Flying Circus sketches pius some surprisingly good animation sequences. Film is uneven, but it does have its moments. A, 9 only) ***1/2 Joan Crawford in perhaps her greatest role as a housewife-turned waitress who finds the business world easier to manage than her daughter (Ann Blyth). A very well acted film. Toshiro Mifune stars as a man who suspects his father's death was not suicide, but murder. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Angell Aud A, 7, 9) * Boring, un- imaginative, pretentious film about a castle inhabited by beings from the planet Transylvania. The lonely characters include a bisexual Franken- stein monster. Karloff must be turning in his grave. * * * .Wednesday. October 5 CINEMA Playboy of the Western World (Old A & D Building, 7, 9:05) "** A story from the Irish theater about a man whose claims to have murdered his tyrannical father turn out to be false. The film's combination of violence and humor works well. Sanshiro Sugata, ***, Sanjuro **** (Auditorium A, 7, 9 respectively.) Two films from famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. Sanshiro Sugata is Kurosawa's first film and one of the fir- st and best martial arts films. It puts to- day's sleazy chop-socky efforts to shame.
