The MichigOn Daily-Thursday, September 29, 1977--Page 7 For Used, Rare; and Out-of'Print Books Car and truck collide at Packard and State WEST SIDE By DENISE FOX .The intersection of Packard and State wps filled with shattered glass last night when, according to eye witnesses, a?-truck travelling east on Packard ran tie red light and careened into a black at traveling north on State. The four occupants of the car and the driver of the truck were rushed to University Hospital. The car passengers were identified at: Ora Vanhorn, 36, listed in good con- dition; J.D Vanhorn, 34, also in good condition; Jacqueline Vanhorn, 7, in fair condition, and Joane Vanhorn, 6, in Fleming presides at punch party (Continued from Page 1) basement of the 137-year-old man- sion was open to browsing students. For those of a more outdoorsy bent, the gardens in, the back were also open for perusal. '"You can play frisbee here," remarked LSA sophomore Sean Fo- ley, while eyeing the spacious back- yard that most students only view from the lofty heights of a Graduate Library study carrel. WHILE REFLECTING on his brief encounter with the president, Foley mused, "There's a line here just as everywhere else." '"He seemed pretty nice," said LSA freshman Debra Milne of Fleming. ''Too bad we don't see any more of him," added engineering freshman Don Verhaeghe, "He's not around much, I guess." WHILE STUDENTS sampled the refreshments or hobnobbed with the Flemings, others stood about making sure that no one would walk off with Fleming's private copy of Woodward and Bernstein's The Final Days or a souvenir football from the first game played on Tartan Turf at Michigan Stadium. While most students seemed im- pressed with the president's resi- dence, LSA -junior Nancy Fodor observed that it "does seem rather secluded from the 'U'." "HAS HE READ all these books?" asked Don Verhaege as he eyed the shelves brimming full of books in the library. "It's a good show of public rela- tions," remarked an LSA junior of the annual affair as he scanned the shelves. ut the Flemings and their abode w ren't the only attractionsx =4'The brownies are excellent, remarked LSA senior Jane Sevald. So's the cider," she added after pilishing off a cup of the hot brew spiked with cinnamon sticks. 'o be sure, no one left the big white house hungry, serious condition. The driver of the truck, Alwin Crawford, 41, was listed in good condition. POLICE ESTIMATE the accident occurred between 8:00 and 8:30 last night. An eye witness said he saw the truck driver run the red light at the intersec- tion and then lose control of his vehicle. "The truck went through the red. light," said Ann Arbor resident Dick Wines. "I heard a big boom and saw, a truck hit the car and fly through the' air." ANOTHER WITNESS to the accident was riding his bicycle down State when the collision took place. Josh Luce, an LS&A junior, said he -saw a little girl dangling from the smashed black automobile and rushed, over to offer his assistance. "I saw another woman in the car bleeding pretty badly from the head," Luce said. "I held a jacket and then a bandage on her head," said the visibly shaken student. JIM BUMSTEAD, a University; sophomore who arrived on the scene seconds after the crash said a little girl was hanging out the window saying, "Mommy, I'm scared." Gary Droz, the supplier from Ralph's Food Market, said he heard a noise and rushed out of the market to see the truck spinning from the crosswalk. The Ann Arbor Police Department said last night they were unable to provide any details of the accident sin- ce the officer's report hadn't come in.
