Grote stays 0 @@ The Detroit Pistons will move to the Pontiac Silverdome as of 1978 it was announced yesterday. They will play out the up-coming season at Cobo Hall. MEANWHILE, EX-MICHIGAN GUARD Steve Grote survived the second-to-last round of cuts made by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers will announce their final two cuts by October 18. Grote is battling former Rutgers star Ed Jordan and free agent Don Smith for the eleventh and final spot on the rohter. Ome By GARY KICINSKI After suffering through a dismal 8-15 season last year, the Michigan women's basketball team received a much-needed boost yesterday with the naming of Gloria Soluk as new head coach. Soluk comes to Michigan after a highly successful 12-year coaching career in the Detroit area. Her last three seasons were spent as head coach at Wayne State University, where she compiled a 45-20 won-loss record. Soluk replaces Carmel Borders, who resigned after a three-year coaching record of 23-28 to devote more time to her family. "It's been one of my dreams for years," Soluk said about returning to Michigan, where she gained a mas- ter's degree in counselling and guidance. "I love U-M both for its academics and its athletics." n Cag Soluk views her function at Michi- gan as more than just a coaching job. "My whole career has been based on upgrading women's athletics," she said. "I feel Michigan has the .,..... ...' ..; ;..:..... .:.. For more sports, see inside potential to become a leader in women's athletics within the next few years, and I want to be a part of its growth." Soluk's tenure at WSU included a 17-7 record last year and a near-miss of a conference title. Three of those victories came at the expense of the squad she now inherits. In spite of this, Soluk was not willing to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Wolverine team on the basis of those three meetings. ors 1 All Grad Students interested in teaching will find G700 SEMINAR ON COLLEGE TEACHING extremely useful in your own classes THURSDAY, SEPT. 29-10-12 a.m. ROOM 2215 SEA Contact Prof. Murray Jackson 764-9472 get coach "I don't think it would be fair to make judgements of the girls on the basis of seeing them from an oppos- sing coach's point of view," she explained. "You can't tell much if you don't work with the kids every day." Soluk said that her goal as coach is to develop each player to her fullest potential. "Their development will be a combination of their effort and my help. Winning will take care of itself." Winning seems to come natural to Soluk's squads. In nine years at Hamtramck St. Ladislaus H i g h School, Soluk compiled an incredible 114-13 record, which included five Class A championships, two Catholic League titles, and back-to-back state high school championships in 1973, and 1974. "When I had the chance to go to WSU, I took it. Since then, I always hoped that an oppor- tunity like Michigan would open up." In addition - to her basketball duties, Soluk will coach Michigan's women's softball team, which begins its first season next spring. She also has been assigned to instruct sports clinics and promote campus interest in Michigan's Recreation, Intra- mural and Club Sports Department. Soluk says she is "very excited" about sponsoring a women's basket- ball clinic at Crisler Arena for high school girls next July. As for the upcoming season, Soluk claims that student support is vital to the success of the team. "I challenge the students to come and see us play. I guarantee they will find us exciting and will love our brand of basketball if they just come out and see one game. If you don't look, you're never going to know." Yankee s. 4-2 win pads lead New York scored two unearned runs in the first inning and Mike Torrez won his 17th game by scattering seven hits as the Yankees beat Cleveland last night 4- 2. The win dropped the Yankees magic number for clinching their second straight AL East crown to four. Anyk combination of four New York wins and Boston' losses will put the Yanks back into the playoffs against Kansas City, who they bested 3-2 in the best-of-five series last year. Meanwhile, Boston dropped half a game when its scheduled- game in Toronto was rained out. The Red Sox, now 31/2 games behind, will make up the game as part of a doubleheader tonight against the Jays. BALTIMORE WAS IDLE and fell to four games back with only six to play. While the Orioles and Red Sox must still fave each other in a three-game series, the Yankees finish with three games each against non-contenders Cleveland and Detroit. In National League action, Chicago crimped the Phillies drive for the title in the East in a 10-7 slugfest.aily Sport ICES GOOD THRU SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1977.
