By KEITH RICHBURG Filipina Narciso and Leonora Per- ez arrived at the Federal Peniten- tiary for Women at Aldeson, West Virginia late Thursday night to begin serving their interim sentence of "observation and testing." The two Filipino nurses, convicted of the 1975 Veterans Administration (VA) hospital poisonings, arrived at the prison at 8:20 p.m., accompanied by Rudolpho Sanchez, counsel of the Philippines from Chicago. Also with the women were Nar- ciso's parents and a sister, and Perez's husband, father, and some friends. NARCISO AND Perez are being temporarily housed in one of the prison's cottages, in a room with two other prisoners. There are no cells at Alderson, and the women's room- mates were chosen by "strictly an in- discriminate selection process," ac- cording to Warden Carson Markley. The women will be moved to their permanent rooms sometime next week, and their testing will begin on Monday. Narciso and Perez were ordered to Alderson by Federal District Judge Philip Pratt, who deferred sentenc- ing the pair until they underwent psychological testing. THE TESTS must be completed within 90 days, but Warden Markley said "normally we get it done before 90 days." Markley said the women will initially undergo a medical examina- tion Monday morning, then take a Stanford Achievement test, an intel- ligence examination, and will receive personal interviews from their case managers. MARKLEY will not meet Narciso and Perez until next Friday, but was told by Alderson's Philippine-born chaplain, who met the women when they arrived, that they were tired and "a little nervous." "It was a long drive from Detroit," Markley said. "But I think once they saw the grounds and that there were no big fences or anything, they were relieved." Warden Markley said that while at Alderson, Narciso and Perez will be treated "just like everybody else." Mascot Toole E. Gaites barks at pearly gates Toole E. Gaites, beloved mascot of Theta Xi fraternity, died yesterday morning, apparently of n a t u r a 1 causes. He was 11. Ironically, a profile of.the dog ran in yesterday's Daily. "THE POOR DOG seemed to be having trouble breathing," explained house steward John Radley. Residents of the co-ed fraternity became concerned Thursday night when the usually-ravenous Great Dane refused to eat dinner. By 10:30 a.m. yesterday he was dead. "Every- body is pretty surprised," Radley said. But he added, "It's kind of consol- ing that he was able to die in his own house." Residents had been ordered to put the aged dog to sleep or find him a new home after he bit a visitor this summer. RADLEY SAID a plaque will probably be mounted on the Theta Xi living room wall commemorating Gaites, who had lived yin; the house since he was a pup, and whose father had romped the halls before him. While no-one can ever take Gaites' place, residents hope they won't be without a mascot for long. "It's a tradition in this house to have a dog," Radley explained. Gaites' burial will be in Milan. No formal funeral services are planned.
