Page 4-Saturday, September 17, 1977--The Michigan Daily The Michigan Daily-Saturday, Septer Offense well oiled and awesome N (Continued from Page 3) Although the coaches are not rejoicing over the graduation of Rob Lytle, Michigan's all time leading ground gainer, they don't worry too much about the running backs. Quite simply, they are loaded. Harlan Huckleby (6-2, 195) returns at tailback after cranking out 912 yards last year while splitting time with Lytle. Many of those yards came on long breakaway runs. "Huck" is an ex- citing runner and a real crowd pleaser. Joining him will be fullback Russell Davis (6-2, 215). Davis got off to a slow start last season with injuries, but. came on strong in the second half of the season. In addition to his running abilities, Davis was quite a high school high jumper, going well over the six foot mark. With Davis and Huckleby both playing full time this season, each could easily top the 1000 yard mark. Backing up this duo will be some other super talents. Lawrence Reid and Gerald Diggs are both pushing Huckleby as is Clayton who can play either wingback or tailback. Meanwhile, the fullback spot will en- tertain some friendly family com- petition as Russell's little brother Michael, Davis will be pushing for playing time. Senior Kevin King will also be looking for a share of the spotlight on Saturdays. With all of these glittering names in the glamour positions, any coach worth the price of his practice whistle will still contend that most football games are won on the line. Without the big men up front moving them. out, the Leaches, Hucklebys and Davises would just get set on their ears regularly. It is in the trenches thatMichigan has it over every other team in the nation. Michigan returns every man from the 1976 front five. The number one stand- out is senior Mark Donahue. The 6-3, 245 pound guard was all-Big Ten, and All-American last season. At the other guard is the only non All- Big Ten man on the line. Senior Gerry Szara (6-1, 243) is nevertheless an out- standing guard. He and Donahue played on the same high school football team and don't stand to be broken up yet. Backing both of them up will be Greg Bartnick who had an excellent spring. At center is Walt Downing, a senior from Pennsylvania and yet another all- conference selection. Rounding out the interior line will be Bill Dufek (6-4, 250) and Mike Kenn (6- 6, 250) at the tackles. Dufek was also All-Big Ten and Kenn was named to the second team. All things considered, the defenses that venture into Michigan Stadium this fall should probably count on a long af- ternoon. At worst, Bo will be criticized for running up points in the "easy" games while not being able to throw the ball when it counts. Such criticism resur- faced after the 14-6 Rose Bowl loss to Southern Cal last January. "The thing that hurt us in the Rose Bowl," said Schembechler, "was not passing but the physical size of their of- fense and their power running the ball. "We're not going to throw out an of- fense that is one of the most prolific in the country. But we do plan to gamble a little more this year." the ANIL OFFENSE VS.
