By GARY KICINSKI Quick! Name Michigan's "offensive interior line" coach. Stumped? Okay, try naming the defensive ends coach, or the offensive backfield coach. Not easy, is it? Everybody know Bo, Michigan's Man in Motion, but his assistant coaches live in relative ob- scurity. They're the guys you always see on the field before games, pointing left or right and giving directions, but they all wear the same blue vinyl jackets and look pretty much alike. However, each of them has' a dif- ferent function and each has a-lot to do with the overall success of the team. Michigan has eight assistant coaches. " Bill McCartney, the defensive coordinator, is the name most easily recognized by Detroit area fans. Mc- Cartney's football teams 'won three Detroit CatholicaLeague Champion- ships and two state titles in four years at Dearborn Divine Child. He compiled a 30-5 won-loss record during that span, and also coached the Class B champion basketball squad in 1973.' McCartney earned 11 letters at Riverview High School where he cap- tained the football and basketball squads and played baseball. He then lettered for three seasons at Missouri while on a football scholarship, and was once named second team All Big Eight. McCartney, 35, was defensive end coach for three years before succeeding Gary Moeller as defensive coordinator this year. e Replacing McCartney as defensive end coach is Dennis Brown, who quar- terbacked the Wolverines during 1967 and 1968. In '68 he led the Big Ten in total offense and was named All Big Ten, leading Michigan to an 8-2 second place finish. Brown spent 1970 as a graduate assistant to Schembechler before going to Dartmouth as freshman coach for a year. He then returned to Michigan to work with the backfield and to serve as varsity-reserve coach. " Jack Harbaugh, the defensive backs coach, is called by McCartney "the premier secondary coach in the country." Harbaugh is a native of Crestline, Ohio where he was an All- State football and baseball player. He went on to Bowling Green, where he once again played both football and baseball and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills. Harbaugh's previous coaching ex- perience includes one year at Morehead State, three seasons at Bowling Green and two at Iowa as defensive backs coach. He joined the Wolverine staff in 1973. " The defensive line coach is Tom Reed, a former assistant coach at Arizona, and an offensive back under two of Bo Schembechler's champion- ship football teams at Miami of Ohio. Reed earned three letters at Miami as an offensive back. He spent four years as defensive line coach at the University of Akron and then coached the defensive secondary on Arizona's 1973 co-championship team. " Jerry Hanlon is the veteran of the offensive coaching staff. He has been in charge of Michigan's offensive line sin- ce 1969. A native of North Bend, Ohio, Hanlon coached several high school teams before joining the staff at the University of D, }- in 1965. The following yea .. MIichigo " Paul Schudel, another Schem- bechler protege from Miami, is the of- fensive interior line coach, entering his third season with the Maize and Blue. Schudel played three years as offen- sive tackle for Schembechler at Miami and was tri-captain his senior year and earned Academic All-American honors. He then spent two years as a graduate asssistant theresbefore moving to New Hampshire as offensive line coach. After two seasons there he coached in the same capacity at \Colorado State for two more years, and then spent another two years as offen- sive coordinator at William and Mary. Schudel came to Michigan in 1975. " Tirrel Burton joined the Wolverine staff in 1970 to be reunited with one of his former Miami of Ohio teammates, Jerry Hanlon, and is Michigan's coach of offensive ends. Burton twice was named All-Mid Aierican Conference andin his senior year averaged 8.8 yards per carry. Af- ter graduating from Miami in 1956 Bur- ton played a season for the Ottawa Rough Riders and then coached at several schools in the Cincinnati area for a decade. Burton then coached a year at Central State of Ohio and back at Miami before coming to Michigan. " Offensive backfield 'oach Don Nehlen is in his first season at Michigan, replacing Chuck Stobart, now head coach at Toledo. Nehlen coached Bowling Green to a 55-35-4 record over the past nine seasons. Nehlen quarterbacked Bowling Green to a three-year 21-2-4 record, in- cluding the 1956 Mid-American Con- ference title. He coached at two Canton high schools and was an assistant at Cincinnati before joining the Bowling Green staff as defensive coordinator in 1965. Nehlen was appointed head coach at Bowling Green in 1968. He resigned in 1976 following a 6-5 season. * Also joining Schdnbechler are four graduate assistants, all former Mich- igan players. They are: " Bob Thornbladh, a native of Plymouth who backed up Ed Shut- tlesworth at fullback and graduated in 1973. , " Barry Pierson, a former safety who returned a punt for a touchdown again- st Ohio State in 1969, the game MIichigan won 24-12 in Schembechler's first season as head coach.
