THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 The Institute for Paralegal Training 235 South 17th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103 (215) 732-6600 Operated by Para-Legal, Inc. Woody By The Associated Press COLUMBUS-Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes, in a move to shore up his injury-riddled offensive backfield, hinted yesterday that he may move Ray Griffin from defense to tailback. The Buckeyes, fifth ranked nationally last week, face invading Minnesota in their Big Ten opener Satur- day. During as 10-0 non-conference verdict over Miami (Fla.), the Buckeyes lost their top two tailbacks, regu- lar Jeff Logan and first substitute Ricky Johnson. LOGAN, THE BUCKEYES' No. 1 rusher in 1976, suffered knee and ankle injuries. He had only 31 yards in 10 attempts before he was hurt in the first half. Johnson, a highly regarded sophomore from Santa Maria, Calif:, piled up 64 yards in seven rushes as Logan's replacement. He, too, departed with a knee shffles back field injury in the second half. That prompted Hayes to discuss reports that Griffin, the brother of two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, would be switched to offense for the Gophers. "There's a rumor going around that we would move Ray Griffin to offense. There might be some substance to it. There might not. You can speculate on it if you want," Hayes told the lunching media yesterday. "IF WE DO SO," Hayes said of the Griffin move, "we wouldn't forget him on defense." Hayes has called Griffin, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior from Columbus, the best safety in the nation this col- lege season. He's regarded as the fastest man among the Buckeyes' regulars. Only because of the loss of Logan and Johnson is Hayes talking of the switch. "For that reason," said the Ohio State coach, "are we .considering putting Ray there and because he played as a freshman at tailback." Griffin, as a wingback and tailback, accounted for 223 yards rushing, a 5.1 yard average, and scored three touchdowns in his freshman season. As a sopho- more, he switched to the defense and became an All- Big Ten Conference safety last fall. HAYES DID NOT rule his leading tailbacks out of the Minnesota game, saying, "Johnson's knee is worst than Logan's ankle. But they are both quick healers." Hayes also said he will work fullback Ric Volley, a 6-foot, 206-pound sophomore from Lynchburg, Va., at tailback in closed practices this week., "Volley doesn't have great speed, but he has good drive," Hayes said. Volley gained 32 yards in nine attempts against Miami, mostly in the second half.
