Gains such as thi enabled the Spartans to defeat the Boilermakers 19-14. CONNERS, VILAS ADVANCE Ever triumphs FOREST HILLS, N.Y. - Chris Evert, hitting her groundstrokes from the baseline with machine-like preci- sion, wore down scrappy Wendy Turn- bull of Australia 7-6, 6-2 yesterday to win her third consecutive U.S. Open women's singles crown. Evert thus becomes the first woman to win three straight Open titles since Maureen Connelly did it in 1951-53. THE VICTORY cemented her stand- ing as the premier player in women's tennis. Ever since losing to Virginia Wade in the semifinals at Wimbledon, Evert has been pointing towards Forest Hills. "I wanted to win this tournament badly, very badly," she said. "I want to stay on top, to be No. 1, and to be No. 11 think you have to win a major title. This was my chance." It was the 113th consecutive clay- court victory for Evert, who showed lit- tle effect from the slight pinched nerve in her left shoulder which she suffered earlier this week, although her first serves were weaker than usual. MEANWHILE, second-seeded Jimmy Connors of Belleville, Ill., the defending champion, and fourth- seeded Guillermo Vilas of Argentina moved into today's men's singl final. Connors beat unseeded Corra Barazzutti, an Italian clay cou specialist, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5, and Vil scored a 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 decision ov Harold Solomon of Silver Sprin Md., before a sellout crowd of 12,58 It was the 45th straight victory( clay for Vilas, who showed patien( and persistence against Solomon, baseline retriever who hardly ev ventured to the net. He engag Solomon in some long rallies - one: the first set saw the ball cross the n 44 times - but also moved to ti attack off short balls and volley( well. THE 25-YEAR-OLD Vilas, wt won six tournaments in a row priorI the Open, took the first four games the match to win the first set easil A service break in the fifth gj gave Vilas the edge in the secor se but Solomon drew even at 5-5 with break of his own. Vilas took th tiebreaker 7-3. Vilas broke Solomon's services( love in the sixth game for tI advantage in the third set, and close it out with another break. Gophers gouge MINNEAPOLIS - Paul Rogind booted an 18-yard field goal with three seconds left to give Minnesota a 10-7 victory over Western Michigan in a non-conference football opener yesterday. The winning score was set up at 1:33, when Minnesota's Jim Ronan blocked a Stu Jones punt and safety Keith Brown returned the ball 17 yards to the Western Michigan 11. The Gophers pushed the ball down to the one-yard line, but couldn't punch it in on two plays up the middle and settled for the field goal. + I I to the OFFICIALSNEEDED pitch- of the after in the The intramural Sports Dept. of the York University of Michigan is looking for STUDENT SPORTS OFFICIALS for: " Softball Ice Hockey " Soccer * Football " Waterpolo eBasketball t ,: Vol leybaofl Experience is not necessary-training provided If Interested, please contact: Sandy Sanders l;M.
